I've read a few books on the late roman empire/early byzantine period, most notably a book called "The Ruin of the Roman Empire and I've always had an interest in roman, byzantine, and dark ages history

Yes, a little. James J O'donnell's views on the importance of Flavius aetius in roman history agree with mine: Flavius Aetius healed the Empire, Ricimer stabbed it in the chest.

Meh, Aetius was ahead of his time, he wasnt audacious enough to take the throne and eliminate the court

Also, rome was too unified yet decentralized because even if Aetius took power a pretender from Gaul or the rhine or the danube or Spain or Africa would rise up and that was something that theordoric and Odacer didnt have to deal with

Aetius was a military strongman. He had the support of all of the generals and the army to do it without being deposed by the east. But he was smart enough not to.

Well, yeah, it generally helped that the East liked him.
