    Default The Cold War IH

    The Cold War IH

NOTE: Colored lines in a country show that it is heavily influenced by one or more of the major powers, ex. South Vietnam (with blue lines) is a US-friendly state

(Yes, I know the map is - I made it with Paint, sowwy guys - and there may be certain accuracies, I couldn't find a 1956 map so I took a modern one instead and modded it)

It is June 1st, 1956. While the capitalist and Communist worlds, NATO and the Warsaw Pact, carefully watch each other from across the Iron Curtain cutting Europe in half, their leaders - the United States and the USSR - are still actively fighting each other through proxies all over the world.

In Europe, Hungary teeters on the brink of revolution. The USSR is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the Hungarians from breaking away, while the USA (while dreaming of the possibility of the Warsaw Pact fragmenting and collapsing early on into their Cold War) is less than eager to seriously interfere in the conflict and risk WW3.

In Africa and the Middle East, the native populations of European colonies are shouting for independence. Some independent states have already fallen far - Egypt has come under the sway of Gamal Abdel Nasser, a nationalistic strongman who has been cozying up with the Soviets and has decided it would be a good idea to nationalize the Suez Canal after Britain and the US retracted an offer to fund their Aswan Dam. Needless to say, this outraged the British, and it is rumored that they are planning to launch a retaliatory attack on Egypt with the French and Israel. To the south, South Africa is coming under increasingly heated criticism for its apartheid policies, and is growing increasingly isolated not just in the Commonwealth but throughout the world.

In other news, Israel is still surrounded by hostile neighbors, while anti-British and anti-monarchy sentiment is nearing breaking point in Iraq. The young King of Iraq, Faisal II of the Hashemite dynasty, is viewed as little better than a puppet of the British, and nationalistic officers are already plotting a coup. Iran, despite having lost its democratic government in 1953, is still prospering (at least in comparison to its neighbors) under the iron fist of the Shah, with a modern military outfitted by the British and Americans and plenty of money rolling into the national coffers from exploitation of Iranian oil, and is considered a reliable ally by the Western powers.

In the Far East, while the two Koreas are still on guard after the Korean War three years ago, the US' and USSR's interest has moved south, to Vietnam. The country had fought the French and Japanese oppressors, and won its freedom two years ago - then, in 1955, South Vietnam declared its independence in a rigged election. The enraged North Vietnamese government has begun to organize the 'National Liberation Front', a Communist South Vietnamese guerrilla army, to take control of the American-backed South.

Lastly, in Cuba - America's own backyard - dictator Fulgencio Batista is having problems with containing Cuban revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. American officials are worried that, should the Communists win there, the USSR will have a base in America's backyard - but can they support a corrupt and hugely unpopular tyrant in good conscience?

The stage has been set for a good number of proxy wars. Now - will the United States and its allies emerge victorious in this Cold War and keep the world free, or will the USSR and its allies come out on top and spread the Revolution to the rest of the globe?

    ---------------------------

    Players:
    Vuvuzela - USSR
    MMM - France
    Fred II - PRC
    Lord Marshmallow - Britain
    empr guy - India
    Dan the Man - USA
    Iran - Kaitsar
    Philippines - MuttonChops

    ---------------------------

    Firstly, there's a ten-player cap.

Secondly, you can play any country you want, though I'd recommend the USA, USSR, France, West Germany, Britain, the PRC, India or Indonesia. I definitely need players for at least the US and USSR.

Thirdly, I'll need all players to find military (including nukes) and population stats for their chosen country. I should also warn you that this is the modern era, so don't expect to be able to wage wars willy nilly and get away without any penalties (especially if you're a nuclear power) - look at what happened to the US thanks to Vietnam, for example.

Lastly, I'm afraid that to make way for this game I'll have to kill the 1900 IH (which I've lost interest in, sadly) and the BHB IH (which never really got off the ground). I will definitely not be killing the DoM IH, however.

I claim the People's Republic of China
when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?

Lol, by CCP I actually meant the Chinese Communist Party (Red China) Also, yes, I would like the majors (Britain, US, USSR) filled in before the less important countries (Ireland, Afghanistan)

Aight, now I need you all to find the military numbers for your country. I'll accept anything between 1953 and 1963, since I myself couldn't find anything for '56

I found the military numbers of 1951 and 1975. Should I just pick the 1951 and include a several thousand?

    @Marsh Yeah, it's closer than '75 anyway, though I'd prefer '53-'63 numbers.
