    Default Fredrik William III

    Hello all,
I thought we could discuss Fredrik William III and how he affected the outcome of the Napoleonic Wars. He is generally portrayed quite negatively and gets a lot of the blame for Prussias failings in the early years. I am not sure that this is entirely accurate however. He was often indecisive sure, but he saw the problems in Prussia and wanted reforms for his country much earlier than 1806 but was hampered by the society he ruled over. He also supported and encoruaged the reforms made after the defeat.

I think he was pretty much controlled by his wife.

Well he broke his promises to grant Prussia a constitition after liberation from the French so I disagree with your claim he was a reforming king.

Well, not all reforms are government related. Under his reign Prussia changed its economy to be much more modern and liberal than other german states that actually got a constitution through the napoleonic wars. Also the emancipation of the jews, even though quite small in scale was quite a reform. I have heard that he, like his predecessors, never liked the jews though, but thatīs another topic.
