Long ago, in a place right of the coast of Greece, a civilization was beginning to form. They were known as the Greater Kingdom of Crete, but they have much to learn. Their main Deity is that of a Man-Bull, known as "Man-o-taur" (cheesy, I know, right?). This kingdom foucuses itself mainly on sea trade with the Israelites and the Kingdom of Byzantium. Our civilizations have always traded with one another, and even fought countless battles alongside eachother. Our bond is strong, and it will not be easy to break.

King ManBearPig didn't allow this, so he sent Pericles, his best admiral, to deal with the problem.

when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.
So, are you also trade partners with Lacedaemon, or are you at war with them (I am talking like a sith lord "If you're not with me, you're my enemy!")?
Patience young one, he hasn't been on today yet, he doesn't even know you're playing

Sorry, I am anxious to get going, though (and I asked because, historically, Crete had strong ties with Sparta, but was practically an enemy of all the other greeks).

His faction is lead by ManBearPig, and we're going to be battling angels and demons. I'm sure he'll agree to trade with you, but historical alignments are irrelevant to this game
Of course, you can use historical things to inspire your actions, just don't count on them to necessarily be true or work out as they did historically in this particular game.
Sailing from the mouth of the Nile river into the Mediterranean sea, a small Dhow made its way towards the island of Crete. For a nation of land dwellers unaccustomed to sailing, setting sail into open sea was an accomplishment all in its own. With borrowed technology from their foes the Saleh people have just begun taking advantage of the bounties of the open water. Docking into the port of Knossos, never have the Cretan people met individuals from the Saleh race, the Dhow's crew were uncertain to the reception they would receive, their dark skins and strange clothing immediately attracted a crowd . A messenger nonetheless made his way to the palace of ManBearPig and delivered a message.
"I bring a letter from Nkosi Degasi MaTsongazeratayaya!"
To the Great King ManBearPig
Forgive me, for not having taken the pleasure of meeting you in the flesh, but the idea of enduring the difficulties of sailing the Mediterranean ocean, sounds as pleasing as having one's flesh gored by a rampaging elephant. Accept my deepest respect to you and and your wealthy Kingdom, though our two race have just met, your nation's trading affluence has reached my ears. I humbly ask you to grace my people and I with the profound honor of becoming a mutual trade partner with you
