    Default Hostages

    Hey guys,

The upcoming Total War made me think about several aspects that could be improved. For an instance, I remember the assassins and diplomats from the previous games. Then I thought, inspired by an other thread here, about surrenders and protectates.

Wouldn't it be a good thing to add a "take hostage" option to your assassin in order to capture enemy familymembers? Or after you capture an enemy general, you would be able to imprison him in order to use him in diplomacy later or threaten to kill him if a nation does not answer to your demands?

Would you like an option to take Hostages?

I'm super super SERIAL of course!!! .

At the end of your glorious battle the hostages all die by the swords of your chosen warriors.

Their heads are sliced like water melons but so smoothly then the blood appears.

If the family member allowed himself to be captured and he was released, he would only commit suicide out of shame from being captured in the first place.

I would not spend good money to free a relative who would just kill himself afterward.

Yes, but it would have to be done well; the more valuable the individual, the more skilled the assassin required. A general's value would also have to be determined well, so that ransoming minor generals is something of a waste of time. The number of troops with the general should also make a difference to the assassin's chances of success. Simple kills should be easier than capture.

...And to kill them, of course.

Tis Bushido; way of the warrior. Samurai cannot live with the shame of defeat, so they must take their own lives. That should play a part. So technically, unless there are mercenaries, there shouldn't be any hostages.

I'd like hostages. But not really as a result of a ninja snatch.
But as a result of diplomatic negotiations as a sign of good faith? Sure!

in the sengoku jidai, families traded their member to other lords as a sign of goodwill and to keep an alliance, if i recall correctly Leyasu tokugawa was a hostage of another clan when he was a child.

it would be a pretty neat feature, trading hostages to keep alliances with other clans.

I only killed them. No point in giving soldiers back to the country your trying to conquer.

Maybe. I'd first like to see a revamped POW system that allows you to kill captured troops in the middle of a battle like in MTW1, but also allows you to mass-execute them all afterwards like in MTW2. I liked both of those features, and I'd love to see them integrated into STW2.

Hmm, how often were generals and family members kidnapped in real life?
The better and more realistic option would be to take prisoners in battles.

im pretty sure they would take samurais and other high class troops as hostages, specially since those soldiers were members of influent families

but i doubt they did with peasants

Maybe another way hostages would work and probably be more fitting to this period is to have an option in diplomacy to send/receive a family member to a faction that you want to improve diplomacy relations with. You would get a large diplomacy bonus with the faction you sent your family member to but if you cross them they would get killed.
