I found at the site of RealtimeUK an "internal Samurai character animation project", this studio made the last intro for CA's Napoleon: TW.

One thing bothers me, it seems that we will still see thousands of duels, rather than coordinated melee effort. I wonder how long it will take the TW to feature 2v1, 2v2, 3v1, 3v2 and 3v3 COORDINATED action, rather than a bunch of duels, where the participants for big part ignore what's happening around and usually die a happy death with a chop to the head from back or sides, just after finishing 'kill him off' animation.

sometimes the animations don't look... natural.
That red samurai got owned.
This made me smile, +rep for your find, here's hoping they'll be working on S2TW as well.
As for the animations not being perfect, it seems like a demo to me, i sure during a production, like in NTW, the animations will be amazingly crisp.

Call to arms! An army of 5.000 is needed.
I think those were done without motion capture but CA said that in Shogun they had professionals do them so animations should be no problem.
There is nothing wrong for me with the animation, the studio worked together with the motion capture specialist Audio Motion (http://www.audiomotion.com/) and these guys have a well known reputation (see project details).
You can see this demo was made for their own showcase but we know CA likes to outsource things and why shouldn't CA pay for a good work especially if we look to J. Russels:
"We want to make the game epic, not in terms of geographic extent like in Empire and Napoleon, but in terms of gameplay depth and really drilling down to the beautiful depth you can within Japanese culture... Because we're representing one culture, we can really show it in all its glorious detail, instead of having to show lots of different cultures around the world in less depth."
and the CG director Ian Jones statement in the project details.

i hope they add more animations than in ETW and NTW. i was really disappointed with almost every animation, ok we did have duels and revolutuions, but i want sabotage, assassination by ninja (and geisha), seppuku, becoming shogun(!!!), destroyed faction, winning campaign, new emperor....
Im sure it'll be in there Nicolaos. I can't see them not putting in vids since they said they would focus on immersion and depth of japanese culture.
I'm a little more concerned about the melee animations between units. tbh this was the biggest disapointment in ETW and perhaps to a slightly lesser degree NTW. The melee animations were good but when they units were not in an animation they just stood around doing nothing whilst the enemy was right in front of their noses. There needs to be more melee animation fluidity in S2TW I hope they manage to work something out.
