    Default Favorite war songs

Inspired by favorite national anthems thread.
Anything goes, anyway a few of mine:
March: Proschyaniye Slovyanki (Goodbye of a Slav woman) one of the more famous pre revolutionary marches
Belaya Armiya, Cherniy Baron (White Army, Black Baron) a great civil war era song
Svyaschenaya Voina (Translated as either Sacred, Holy or Righteous War) written the day after Germany attacked Russia
Na Pole Tanki Grohotali (Tanks Rattled on the Fields) sad song about tank crew dying. Also adapted for miners, train drivers and airplane pilots at one point or another.
    Remarkably has English lyrics:
The tanks were rattling like a thunder
The soldiers went to final fight
And here they carried young commander
    With head all broken outright

His tank was hit with armor-piercer
So say good-bye to Guardian crew
Just four more corpses in the hillside
Will add to this fair morning view

'Cause now the vehicle is a-burning
Wait for the shells to detonate
You wanna live to see this morning
But you're too weak and it's too late

So they'll lift you from the wreckage
They'll put your coffin on the clay
And fire & thunder from the mainguns
Will see you into your last way

For now the telegrames are flying
To tell the friends and relatives
That their good son is never coming
    And never getting any leave

And there's that photo on the bookshelf
Collecting dust for years on end -
    In uniform, with shoulder-boards on...
And he will never be her man.

    In unifo-orm, wI-EEEEEEth
    shoul-der-bo-ards OOOOOOOn...

    Soviet Tanks Armies march
22 of June, exactly at 4 song about beggining of war
Esli Zavtra Voina (If Tommorrow There's War)
V Puty (having trouble translating this, so I'll put down Advance as the name)
Bolgariya-Rossiya (Bulgaria-Russia) song prasising Bulgaria made after they surrendered to us
March of the Deffenders of Moscow
    Soviet Artillery March
Song of the War Correspondents (Jazzy)
Song of the Three Tank Troops
About the battle of Khalkin Gol, perhaps my favorite of the non march ones.
Lyrics particularly inspiring, a quick translation:
On the border dark clouds are forming,
    The unforgiving place is quiet.
Near the tall cliffs of Amur
    Protectors of the motherland stand.

There the enemy faces a block,
    There stands, brave and strong,
Onthe borders of the far eastern land
    An armored shcok batallion.

    There live
    In an ubreakable, strong family
Three tank troops, three happy friends—
Crew of a war car (tank).

Heavy due laid on the grass,
    Fog laid near the taiga.
    That night the samurai decided
    To cross the river border.

But our spies reported it precisely, —
And went, whipped into a fury,
    On our far eastern homeland
    The armored shock batallion.

The tanks raced, stirring up a wind,
    The fearsome armor advanded.
And the samurai flew at us
Under the pressure of steel and fire.

    And they destroyed
All their enemies in a fiery attack
Three tank troops, three happy friends
    Crew of a war machine.

    Accept us, Beautiful Suomi

Don't know whether these songs were authentic but they were featured on one of my all time favourite movies Das Boot. Translated from German...

    The hour has come
    Britain's power fades
    Through U-boat men's strength
    Great Germany's power lives

    U-boats sail
    Far, far into the sea
    U-boats hunt
    Torpedoes out of the tubes
    Hunt England, England into death.

    A bursting and a creaking
    Breaks the steamer's hull
    To make this last journey
Isn't that a choice of death?

    Day and night
We have not closed our eyes
On the great hunt on the high seas
    Behind binoculars
    And wet to the bone,
The watch peers out for tonnage,
The diesel engines sound, the sea grows rough,
    The boat is so small
    And the sea so large,
Now it depends on every hand
From the captain to the last man.

Home is so far from here,
    Home, we greet you,
    For you we travel here,
The waiting death in the torpedo tube,
Straight to the enemy! U-boats forward.

    Two weeks we've already stood
On deck and at diving stations
    Valhalla still not in sight,
    The days pass by
    In perpetual sameness
    And still no quarry.
Suddenly an alarm sounds from the tower!
    A large convoy
Pushes hard through the storm! Now it depends on every hand
From the captain to the last man.

That's a war song? And all these years I've been singing it for the wrong reasons!

I pick the Marine Hymn and Star Spangled Banner. I can't really think of any other war songs right now.

    Deustche Afrika Korps marching song:

    English:

Hot over African ground, the sun is glowing.
Our panzer engines sing their song!
German panzers in the blazing sun,
As they stand in battle against England.
The tracks rattle, the engine roars,
    Panzers roll in Africa.

I used to have the Mp3 versions of alot of military marching song but alas it is all lost due to formating

Trying to find the Mp3 on the net.

Not strictly speaking a war song... but I love the theme tune to Dad's Army. Kicks off with the immortal line,

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr. Hitler?
If you think we're on the run.

edit - in the film, The Battle of the Bulge, the Germans start singing a war song (they are youths who are about to use the new tanks). Does anyone know what is is. More specifically - does anyone have a link for it? Thanks in advance.

We'll Meet Again, by our very own Dame Vera is fantastic. Really pulls at the heart strings at times. I can see why it was so popular during the War.

Many of those Russian songs are as good as Sousa - the master of marching music.

It's called the Panzerlied and is one of my favourites as well along with the British Grenadiers.
The lyrics are here and I was able to download it from Limewire.

hmm, i would hardly all it a war hym....but i better stick up for the British side!

    Jersualem
And did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon England's mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
    On England's pleasant pastures seen

    And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
    And was Jerusalem builded there
    Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow (my bow) of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand
    'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
    'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

and of course Swing Low sweet Chariot (the England Rugby team 'war' song)

    Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!

I looked over Jordan and what did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home!
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home!

    Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!

If you get there before I do,
Comin' for to carry me home,
Jess tell my friends that I'm acomin' too,
Comin' for to carry me home.

    Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!

I'm sometimes up and sometimes down,
Comin' for to carry me home,
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Comin' for to carry me home!

EDIT: Oh, and of course the Beatles Magical Mystry tour....there is a song to scare thine enemy

I like the March of the Big Knives.

Swing your big saber against the devils' head!
All you patriots of the nation!
The day for the War of Resistance has started!
The sons of our workers and farmers are at the fore, and the people of our entire nation backs us!
Our militias are marching forward breavely,
    Aiming at our foes.
    Destroy them, Destroy them, Charge!
Swing your big saber against the devils' head!
    Kill!

    Note:
During the Japanese Invasion of China, the brutal Imperial Japanese Army were commonly called devils (Guizi) by the Chinese.

My favorite war song(s), the FSU warchant and our fight song:

You've got to fight, fight, fight for FSU!
You've got to scalp 'em Seminoles!
You've got to win, win, win, win this game,
and roll on down and make those goals.
For FSU is on the warpath now,
and at the battle's end she's great.
So fight fight fight to victory.
    Our Seminoles of Florida State!

    F L O R I D A S T A T E

    and the repeat

sorry i was at the homecoming game last night and it was great. I got the song stuck in my head...

    My favorite the Irish National Anthem;

    The Soldier's Song

    We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
    With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
    The starry heavens o'er us;
    Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Chorus:
    Soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
    Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
    That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
    The long watched day is breaking;
    The serried ranks of Inisfail
    Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
    Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
    So chant a soldier's song.
