I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's said in the PC Gamer UK article on the game.

It makes sense, as CA's system is to release a revolutionary game followed by an evolutionary one using the same engine (both with expansions). Napoleon doesn't count as this generation's evolutionary game as that was Empire's expansion turned into a stand-alone game (and both Empire and Napoleon's 'expansions' are tiny by previous standards, certainly not worthy of comparison to Viking Invasion or Kingdoms), so it makes sense that Shogun 2 will be the evolutionary game for the Empire engine this time around.

This is also what makes me doubt Rome 2 will be next, and may be more likely to be the evolutionary game for the 4th-generation engine. The first game in each generation has always been original (Shogun, Rome and Empire).

I do wonder if they are going to take advantage of the slightly more simple dynamics of the Shogan game, limited factions, limited scale, limited goals...

Would they go back to the chess board style map? I personally doubt it...

My medieval Japanese history is weak so i don't know if the concepts of protectorates (or vassels) are appropriate. Alliances probably are...

    Spies, diplomates, ninjas, geishas...

    Monks as troops and rebels...

    Wacky mountain terrain...

Generals being the single "hardest"unit on the battlefield...

I am looking forward to this I have to say...

Warscape is made for guns. I mean i bet they will reuse lots of the code but i don't think it will be close enough for being warscape. I hope it's different anyways the hand to hand combat was annoying in warscape. In the old versions it was much more fun to have a ass just attacking, instead f like 1v1s all over the place.

Warscape is the base engine that CA build their game engine around.

I think Warscape itself is updated and improved by the developers of Warscape but CA have been consistent in using the Warscape engine and software in all their Total Wars.
