Just a hint for everyone who likes to just use the new ship models / damage effects and suffers incompatibility problems with mods who also use a modified landbattles.xml:

1.) Install the mod to another folder than your ntw folder

2.) Copy the rnmGrand_Fleet.pack file to your NTW data folder

3.) Open the rnmGrand_Fleet.pack with the "PackFileManager"

4.) Erase all entries under "effects" (among these is the "landbattles.xml")

5.) Save the rnmGrand_Fleet.pack file and exit the PackFileManager

6.) Make sure to use the batch-file of this mod in order to force the game to use the file (and thus the modified ship models); you can also use the NTW Mod Manager of course

My thanks goes to Sharp for making the modified damage effects. This is something that bothered me since ETW.

I dislike what you have treated my mod...
Why no one pays attention to the balance?
Few people are interested naval battles?

I don't understand. It was my intention to help people who want only this part of the mod. And now you're saying "all or nothing"? Why?

I also thanked you for your work and now this. You're a strange person.

See, there are certain things you can and should do, and other things you can't. You can - and should - develop a mod according to your own idea. You can also regulate the copyright of the mod. You cannot however tell people how to use your mod and what they can't do with it for their personal needs...

No, that was not the reason I modified your mod. It was because of another mod which wasn't compatible because it also uses a landbattle.xml. And since I don't need yours because I just use the edited models I erased it, thus making your mod compatible.

And then I decided to share my knowledge. It's as simple as that.

I like any mod that changes the naval aspect of the game, because it was so wrong upon release, but there are some things i don't agree with in this one.
the colouration of Hulls is incorrect, expecially for Great Britain and France. Great Britain has orange hulls - they should be yellow for Ships of the Line, and predominantly black and white for frigates (Nelson Checker). France should be similar to Britain, but with less attention to detail, such as less vibrant colours and/or shabbiness. THEY WEREN'T BLACK AND WHITE FOR ANOTHER 40 YEARS.

I do like however that not all ships have the distinct stripe down the sides, which was used to confuse the enemy into thinking they were engaging a smaller ship.

If you want to have a realistic british crew, there is the "england expect" mod...

congratulation sharp , your mod is perfect... especially your damages textures... but I agree with thomas cochcrane: french ship of the line weren't black and white at this time but later (1840). If you want a correct texture choose the clear wood color...

    good job anyway

    Just to say: wow!
I had planned to get into TW for quite a while and just y'day picked up Napoleon. Was totally under-whelmed by the PDF on the Manuals disc. But kinda trusted that the community would have some real stuff.

wow ... thanks for this; count me in!

is this compatible with Europe in conflict?
What makes a real American? A cowboy hat? Enjoying a fine T-bone
steak? Going to a baseball game? Shooting a gun? Maybe it’s the freedom to go
into a poor country and tell them how to do things?! Heh! Those are all great
qualities! But one thing that makes a true patriot is the ability to choose
an American car! When you buy an import you take a hot meal off a hard
working American’s table. There, there! This poor girl is going
to starve to death, just because you bought a cheaper, more efficient
Maibazu. Without gross symbols of excess, what will Americans have to look up
to? Our great industries is a threaten! Cars, pornography, armaments! And
they need your help! So the next time you buy a car, a piece of adult
literature or a missile defense system! Make sure you do the American thing!

    Hi Sharpie!

I'm intrigued by the changes you have made to Wind Speed in this mod, but can't quite understand the diagram. (see below)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

If I understand it correctly what you are explaining is that in the standard ETW game (I assume you mean't NTW too) ships move at a percentage of their maximum speed depending upon their point of sail.

So, when running with the wind behind them they suffer a 35% penalty to their movement, when reaching its a 70% penalty and when turned directly into the wind its a 100% penalty (e.g. no forward movement)

If I've understood that right then your mod reduces the penalties when running before the wind to 10%, and when reaching to 60%, but I don't understand why the diagram suggests that the penalty when sailing into wind is now only 75%, whilst its 100% when close hauled.

That can't be right based upon what you say the mod does, so I must assume I'm misreading the diagram.

Incidently, my own experience of sailing and the research conducted by Edwards and McKenzie for their Napoleonic Naval Wargame suggests that relative speed through the water varies according to point of sail as follows:

Wind over the beam or quarter (Reaching) = Fastest point of sail (100% movement)
Wind from astern (Running before the wind) = Slightly slower (approx 80% movement)
Bearing to windward (Hauling/Close Hauled) = Slowest point of sail (approx 50% movement)
Turned Into the Wind (Luffed) = Negative movement as the ship drifts downwind.

So, the logic is that ships sail fastest when the wind is blowing over their side, as the maximum sail area is being presented to wind at that angle. When the wind is blowing over the stern some speed is lost because some of the sail area is masked by other sails, and when the wind is coming over the forward quarter the reduction caused by masked sails is made worse by the wind pressure on the hull and sails trying to drive the vessel downwind. Finally when the ship turn direclty into wind the entire force of the wind tries to drive the ship backwards, although the natural tendency is for it to swing off the wind and back onto its previous course (broaching to).

Approximate angles on the bow for square rigged ships are given as:

    0-55 degree's (Luffed)
    56-79 degree's (Hauling)
    80-160 degree's (Reaching)
    161-180 degree's (Running)

Just thought you might find that useful.

Love the work done on the mod. I was wondering why the British 1st rate 98's are missing side hull textures?
