They say they're "going back to the basics." Since going back to Japan would be really small scale relative to what they are capable of doing, its probably a fair bet that it will be Rome 2: Total War. I personally think RTW was the greatest PC game of the decade, so hopefully they won't blow it like Medieval 2: total war.

Agreed. Rome Total war was really good. Medieval 2 was decent. Empire was BORING.

Back to the basics is Shogun in my view.
After Shogun there was Medieval1 and Rome was the third game they did.

there was a countdown timer on their website that stopped at 1908.

After NTW, I can't imagine them messing up the series any more, and I really don't think the TW style game will work in a WWI setting (even pre-ww1 setting)...But, since I have ZERO expectations for any new game they announce, I can only be pleasantly surprised.

What I'm saying though, is that if they go back to shogun, they are going to have to drastically expand that game to mainland Asia or something. In terms of variety of cultures and strategies, I think the Shogun setting is very limited compared to the vast Afro-Eurasia map offered in MTW and RTW.

And when I imagine expanding to the mainland, I can't see an exciting game. This is not an ethnocentric view but an historic view. Politics of that era were basically an unchallenged China (prior to the Mongols), the conquering Mongols, and the internal wars of Japan. It didn't have the dozens of competing kindoms that existed in the western world.

Damn I would really buy a Rome Total War totally remaded it, with graphics of ETW and a improved gameplay of Medieval 2.

please rome 2 not shogun. Shoguns too small and dull for me. Need centurions and cataphracts!!
