    Default Identify that Tank/Ship/Plane/Artillery etc

    Considering all nations have very distinctive-looking weaponry, I thought it would be an interesting idea to start a thread based around the identification of tanks, ships etc. through their photographs. When you identify the object in question, please give a little more details about it like its service history, famous battles it took part in etc., although these may be included by the poster if the object is particularly obscure.

    Here is the first picture, nice and easy:

    Built in the 20s and then underwent a refit in the 1930s. Named after a province in its country of origin.

    I suppose you can give reputation to those who guess correctly.

    @Jom

    I think it's Japanese. The Kaga perhaps? Partook in the 2nd Sino-Japanese war and the attack on Pearl Harbor.

    Defo looks like a carrier conversion. From a battleship or cruiser to Aircraft Carrier. If it took part in Pearl Harbour and was lost at Midway, then Last Roman is right.

    The Kaga is correct! Known for a very distinctive profile with a funnel below the flight deck. It's a carrier conversion from the Tosa class battleship. Ugly as sin, too.

    I think we should do this on a rotating basis so it's Last Roman's turn.

    Why is that exactly? We have a history quiz stickied and as long as people stay within the rules I set out and provide sufficient information about the object in question, I believe this thread can be educational and well within the ambit of the VV.

    Yes, that's a history quiz. This is merely naming vehicles. I don't understand how that links with history - unless you're telling me tanks, ships, planes and artillery don't exist right now in the present.

    I will draw your attention to the line I used in the OP:

    When you identify the object in question, please give a little more details about it like its service history, famous battles it took part in etc.
    Clearly we are looking at vehicles which have had an impact on history due to their roles in battles. If you don't like it, fine, but please stop trying to ruin other people's enjoyment.

    It was built in 1941. It had a sister ship. It lead a lone suicide mission against an overwhelming enemy carrier force in the battle of Leyet Gulf. To this day it is still the largest warship to ever be built anywhere in the world. It's guns were that powerful that it couldn't fire them all at once or the ship would capsize. I am...

    Is that not what they incorrectly said about the HMS's Nelson and Rodney? Or something along the lines of the gun decks ripping up, as all her main guns were toward the front of the ship instead of in the traditional positions.

    The only reason I was able to tell it was Japanese is from the distinctive flight deck.

    Here's an odd one for you blokes

    It was built during WWII as an anti-tank device and did see some action in 1944.
