    Icon3 Otherworld: Total War?

    Fellow Comrades,

I've been playing NTW for several weeks now and loving it, after my first campaign I switched to a mod (Tyrant) to enhance gameplay on all levels. And I've found that for a lot of mods and dreams we run into a barrier: history.

Basically the wars we play and scenarios we recreate all have a basis in reality and while this is fun, it also limits the possibilities for gameplay and scenarios. And this got me to thinking; why stick to history?

This spiraled me into a path of imagination, constrained only by the modding limitations currently before us (give modding tools nao CA :O!), and found that with the tech available in the game there is a lot of fun to be had and stuff to.. well.. uhm make up!

I would love to see a complete reshuffling of this gaming world with completely new nations with their own histories, tactics and goals. I would love to see actual religious and cultural struggle with made-up nations all distinct and perhaps even more importantly; free to be what we want them to be.

How about actual dedicated stake-layers? Grenadiers that can actually toss grenades? More dedicated melee units? It all becomes possible when we move out of actual history of the world into Otherworld history.

A brief overview of the kinds of things I envision:
    - The major factions all have distinct specialisations in: artillery; light skirmishers and scouts; heavy cavalry; heavy infantry all tied with the origins of that nation.
    - minor nations are mostly derived from the major ones with comparable units per specialisation type; BUT with distinct aspects.
    - an area of recruitment system to enlarge the roster of troops for expanding nations.
    - heavier emphasis on religion and culture as well as more exotic goals for nations.
    - more melee units in general
    - many more

These changes don't have to affect BAI and CAI fundamentally and thus can be changed seperately from the ideas I propose.

What do you guys think, would you like to see something like this?

    Cheers,
    Matz

Sounds like a good idea. However i don't have the knowledge, time and dedication to mod but good luck.

I've been giving it some more thought, and this is what the main factions could be like:

    5 Main nations:
The first major nation is located in the temperate west of Europe, around contemporary France and Germany. They're a parliamentary monarchy with illusions of grandeur, driving them to spread their self-proclaimed superior culture around. They specialize in heavy infantry boasting well-trained and especially well-equipped soldiers all around.

The second major nation is located to the north-east of Europe, in Finland and further east. An war-lord empire inhabiting rugged terrain, they have set their eyes upon the fertile lands east and south, looking for a brighter future for its people by taking that of others. They specialize in skirmishers and light infantry, capable of traversing long distances across unforgiving lands, otherwise resorting to mass in numbers to quickly overwhelm enemy opposition.

The third major nation finds itself at the southern regions of Europe near the Alps and northern Italy. They are a nation of
proud nobility, eschewing the barbarism and pretentiousness of other peoples and recognizing only the power infused in their bloodlines. This faction excels with its cavalry and is generally hard to break.

The fourth major nation is located at the far south and southeast of Europe in the dry areas around the mediterranean. This people's republic puts great stock in the protection of its people and must see to the proliferation of their state, often by crippling the power of others. With great artillery might does this nation ensure its future.

The fifth and final nation is a scattered one, consisting of several merchant republics united under the banner of the united guilds, they are located on the islands surrounding Europe and Gibraltar. This merchant confederation seeks to ensure new markets wherever it can and enforce its monopoly over as many lands as it can. This faction boasts the best navy, augmented with privateer and a slew of mercenary troops.

The minor nations are placed around these nations, each with their own twists and specialties. Most minor nations have cultures comparable to the major nations they're close to. This may or may not be the case with religions however.

So what do you think of this scenario?

    Cheers.

I've had an idea for a sci-fi total war but considering the fact that we don't have modding tools and the other fact that it would require massive amounts of handwaving on things, it's probably not going to happen.

But I fully support this and willing to help in anyway I can. Though my main criticism is that you probably shouldn't over do the specialization otherwise you'll fall prey to this:

@superseaotter: that was the first thing that popped into my mind as I thought about this as well. The great thing about this period is that in theory anything can take out anything, it's all in the application. Bullets kill grenadiers dead as anything.

Basically every faction would have access to a standard roster of troops: General Staff; militia; line infantry; skirmishers; light cavalry; heavy cavalry and cannons.

Then building from that base it becomes more complex as some nations might not get howitzers in their home regions, maybe some nations can use snipers, or (actually grenade-armed) grenadiers, heavy lancers, stake-layers, duelists, commandos etc.

There's alot to experiment with but PvP play would get top priority so all factions are balanced against each other.

For now I've still got a lot of stuff to explore modwise because I don't have the skill required to start modding but once I'm sufficiently knowledgeable I want to go ahead with this idea. By then I will need help at the very least with skinning because that's easily my worst field.

For now I'd love input for more ideas, names, issues etc and I'll try to keep you posted as this brainchild materializes more and more.

I'd love a lot of greatcoats for a less dainty presentation, except for maybe the snobbish factions .

    Cheers.

Have you ever seen 'Thera, the legacy of the Great Torment' Mod? It's a mod with a different map and different nations, all trying to rebuilt their lands after great storms and disasters plagued the lands.
    Check it out: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=991
I just think it fits in with what you asked about a different world
It's for M2TW Kingdoms but it might give you some ideas
