Re: [DLV AAR] An Eastern Jewel in a Western World!!! Chronicles of a French Miserable.
Excellent updates my friend! I've been too long away. So what will be Phillipes calling now? Will he travel and take the fight to the enemy? Or will he stand and hold the line?
About this grim match: Those pikes is a hardy gang who won't take no for an answer. All of them militias are armed in the finest armour a merchant can buy. However, they don't stand a chanche to the butchering axemen there. If I didn't knew better, they would be left over vikings (Btw, I would love see Louise take the fight to the Norsemen. Since they got a completly new roster Yes I stink of bias to own).

Re: [DLV AAR] An Eastern Jewel in a Western World!!! Chronicles of a French Miserable.
I was definitely interested to see how Phillippe would handle the bastard child, but I think he handled it perfectly. It will now be interesting to see which of his sons he will favor over time.
Now we need to get the evil king killed off, and maybe his son too.
Re: [DLV AAR] An Eastern Jewel in a Western World!!! Chronicles of a French Miserable.
It is funny how different your thoughts are about Louis.
Some want him to be slain and some want him to impale those bastards dutch...

Very nice updates, but how can someone not finish reading Arnoul's message? It must be that Philippe is too excited to read whether his brother survived the battle. He may be the king already for all we know... If I were him I would start at the end to see what happened...
Even if he'll be king there seems to be quite a few young family members coming up and making trouble down the road.
You've got plenty of crossbowmen to protect the rest of the army, as long as the Dutch cavalry is not too fast... now eagerly awaiting the rest of the story!
Ah ah, you killed me.
Yeah, I cut the battle in two parts because it was a hard and long one. But be sure that Philippe didn't stop the message. I know that the last line is confusing...
About the new members of the family, I was stunned when I saw the message of 3 new baby boys, and most particularly the one of Louis.
I never had so many sons in any of my campaigns so it is a good point.
Crossbowmen are crucial to fight the pikemen indeed. Let's hope the dutch cavalry would spare some...
Thanks for your support and your nice comments.

FINNALY Louis Will Kick some Dutch ass And later impale them on their own Pikes(At least that would do the Louis i been reading of all this time)

You made me laugh reading your comment. Thanks for that.

Philippe is calling for Louis's blood. Indeed, he wants to revenge his first love Helene, and stop being the puppet of the French King and Michel.
Philippe clearly wants to take the lead and be independent. To Paris...
Ah, the norsemen. They had sent some good warriors skills to the french soldiers, since they lived in Normandy. I would love to make some fight with the Norsemen soon. Maybe in a few years. I have a little idea about that now.
For the moment, the Dutch are the priority.

But how could Philippe take his revenge?
Anyway, as you noticed, the offspring of Philippe is going to provide me some plot food. Nice.
One time, I feared that because of the ugly Clara, Philippe wouldn't suceed to have some childs. But I was wrong, fortunately.

He had finally been killed by that bastard Norbert when I was away in Italy...
The Flanders’s troops tried to round the church when the crossbowmen began to shoot them. It was an easy target. The hill position was increasing the strength of the arrows. The other French soldiers were watching this rain of iron with some pleasure.
The first Dutch troops targeted were some unfortunate pikemen. Their deadly spears were useless tools against the hundreds of sharpen tips. They were falling on the ground of their Duchy.
Nevertheless, they were still moving forward, with the bulk of the army behind them. The French crossbowmen were shooting and reloading as quickly as possible.
Willem was behind his army, surrounded by the best of the Dutch knights. He was shouting orders to increase the speed and cohesion of his army. His armor was one of the best of the Christendom. It was clear that he wasn’t there to have some friendly times with Louis.
Everything was going well for Louis. He was watching the foes losses because of the arrows. The Dutch were near the French lines, but there were still time before the clash between the infantry troops. Suddenly, Louis or maybe one of his bodyguard caught sign of a cavalry troop trying to outflank the French lines. Louis didn’t think too long and decided to charge them with his own bodyguards. Indeed, the other French cavalry troops were at the opposite side of the lines, hidden under some wood. Louis charged the foes cavalry. They were some mailed knights, less experimented than Louis knights, but still a dangerous strength. The clash was bloody and without mercy.
Willem saw this movement and decided to take the opportunity to charge the French troops with the rest of his cavalry strengths. It was clearly a diversion that the Dutch made with their mailed knights. The axemen were the first line to be broken through by some mailed knights. Fortunately, the hill position decreased the speed and strength of the cavalry charge, but it was still deadly.
Quite in the same time, Nicolaas van Rijsel, the Dutch general, charged with his heavy knights the other side of the French lines. They were some swordsmen there. It was hard for those French soldiers to support the charge because their shields weren’t designed to be protected against cavalry spears. A lot of French soldiers found their death hammered by the steed hoofs.
Then all the Flanders’s infantry charged the French lines, already broken by the cavalry charges. Willem was amongst the bulk of his army, encouraging and motivating his soldiers to take the French blood. It was too much for the French lines. They were near to rout when the French cavalry rang the charge. The aimed the Dutch general Nicolaas.
The fight was awful. Every cunning blow was allowed and pain cries could be heard everywhere in the field. The battle reached its height. Nobody knew where Louis was. Nobody knew where Willem was. Every soldier was fighting, for his life, for his leader, and for his Kingdom.
The Dutch general Nicolaas was finally surrounded by dozens of French knights.
He didn’t accept to surrender and fought till the end. He was then killed by a massive blow in his shoulder, breaking his armor and shattering some of his bones. He fell down and was soon trampled on by French hoofs. A clamor rang out in the left lines. They were now safe from the Dutch and they regained courage.
Willem heard that and decided to launch his last strength in the battle and to fight himself in the melee. He fought some knights, some infantry, and succeeded to maintain the cohesion needed for his infantry troops to be efficient. He was like a lion, roaring and shouting.
Nobody knew where Louis was. The French lines were still fighting but they were shrinking quickly. There were less ardor and enthusiasm. Everybody feared the worst for the King. And everybody could see the Dutch Heir, still fighting in the middle of his troops. It was the key time of the battle.
It was when Louis came back…
He was still alive, with just two of his bodyguards. The rest was still fighting against cavalry troops. That was a trap made by Willem to Louis. Much more than a single mailed knight troop was in fact fighting against Louis. But he succeeded to slaughter a lot of them and to escape in order to maintain the courage of his soldiers in the main field. He was right, because the French line suddenly took the best upon the foes and began to surround and flank them.
It was when Willem decided to flee, like the bastard coward he was…
Louis ordered all of his light cavalry to chase and capture him. The rest of the French cavalry started the hunt.
The remains of the Flanders’s infantry troops were beginning to rout, after hearing for the flight of their Leader. Louis and the rest of his bodyguards were drawing drills of blood in the Dutch lines. It was the end of the battle, and the beginning of the carnage.
However, there were still some groups of warriors to fight despite any hope of victory. Some pikemen were keeping their cohesion and inflicting heavy damages to the French spearmen, quite defenseless in close fight against the long spears. They finally agreed to surrender.
In the other parts of the fields, the men hunt was at its height. Some unfortunate pikemen who decided to flee were coldly executed without any possibility to surrender.
Even Louis the Merciless was participating at the butchery. In fact, he wouldn’t have let to others the pleasure to slain and spread blood in the field. Blood, swords and tears. Louis’s world…
The victory was celebrated as a heroic one and people of France were proud of Louis. He was the new hero of the Kingdom. The battle was bloody and terrible for each side but the French were victorious. Thousand of corpses were lying on the field.
However, the French army was severely damaged and reduced, due to the heavy losses. The cavalry was the shadow of what it was at the beginning and the infantry couldn’t support another great battle.
The great news was that the heir of the Duchy, Willem, was finally captured alive by the French light cavalry. Louis decided to come back in Paris with that very interesting prisoner.
The rumors said that Louis tried to negotiate the exchange of some land and money against the Heir. But the request was too heavy. Louis was said having asked for Antwerp and the land around. The King of Flanders finally refused to agree and the poor Willem was tortured for one week in front of Notre Dame, before to die. He had been mutilated, castrated, blinded… Louis was not called Merciless for nothing. Even Parisian people who suffered the previous Flanders sieges were annoyed of such a punishment suffered by Willem.
After that, it was clear that the fight between France and Flanders would be a death one…
These news were quite annoying. I was extremely disappointed to know that Louis had definitely regained its authority, and had a new son. However, I had already taken my decision and it was too late to renounce. I was heading to Paris, to catch that bastard Louis and to punish him.
The dices were already thrown.

Oh yes, I saw those amazing vikings and each time you remember me that I forgot to use Taiji work, I felt like a deep idiot , because the feedback about those improvements is so positive.
But I installed DLV nearly one year before to do this AAR, so I didn't changed, and in fact, I didn't heard about BB before. I should have searched better.

He had finally been killed by that bastard Norbert when I was away in Italy...
The major problem I was facing in the Iberian Peninsula was that the bastards Spanish would surely try to attack again, and more particularly when I would be far from Zaragoza. I was forced to maintain a lot of military strengths there and in Pamplona. It restricted the troops I could bring with me to Paris. However, I needed the more powerful strengths to achieve my plans. With the help of Bertrand du Guesclin and Olivier, we gathered the more soldiers we could, and I continued to build higher and stronger defensive walls in Zaragoza.
After some long weeks of preparation, I decided to order my army to leave the city. We were not as many as I wanted but I thought it was sufficient, that we would hire more troops around Toulouse and in the south of France. I saw a last time Bertrand du Guesclin. I advised him to be very attentive and aware of the perversity of the Spanish snakes. They were surely waiting for the first opportunity to cut our throat. I sent him the full authority over the French Iberian County, including Zaragoza, Pamplona and Narbonne. I saw the intelligence in his eyes and I knew that he was the man to secure the wealth of this magnificent territory.
I was convinced that I didn’t need so much time to make my “duty” in Paris, and I would be back soon. Maybe I was overconfident those times…
The September ‘sun was just appearing behind the hills when my troop began its long walk to Paris. We were no more than a few thousand of soldiers. They were militia troops. I preferred to let the experimented ones to defend the cities.
It was the beginning of a new adventure… Not an easy one. Of course…
After a week of walk, we joined the south of the Pyrenees. The plan was to go along and join Narbonne, in order to resupply. We were on the main road when we saw the dust clouds of a troop far away. I winced. It couldn’t be the same trap than some months ago. Who were they? They seemed to be a lot of people walking in order. It couldn’t be anything else than a military troop. And it was surely not some friends.
I was expecting some French loyal troops, sent by Louis to capture me again, or maybe some Spanish troops trying to attack by the North… I ordered the army to stop, and to prepare for a new battle. It was really annoying to be in your country and to be as unsecure as in a foreign and enemy one.
Then I sent some scouts to learn who they were. They didn’t take too much time to come back. - “They are some looters! They are Spanish looters!”.
I was puzzled. What could do Spanish looters there? I never had been warned about them by my spies. I shouted: - “What are they doing there? Do they want to surrender? Go back and ask them?”.
The little scout rushed back and I asked for Olivier. I made a plan with him. I let him the leadership of our light cavalry troop. I ordered him to hide behind a hill at our left and to wait. If we would finally engage a fight, he was supposed to round the foes and to charge their back. Olivier approved and rode back without a word.
I disposed my troops in two lines. A first line of crossbowmen and a second one of spearmen. It was the only efficient formation I could make. A defensive one.
My scout finally came back and before he started to talk, I had already known the answer of the looters : “No”. They were led by a Spanish exile lord. He had looted the South of Narbonne for himself and he was now walking toward Zaragoza to help the Spanish troops. He was behaving like a mercenary. He was named Ynigo de Montbeltran, and it was sure that he would be dead tonight…
I warned my soldiers to be ready.
That swine looter was leading some light troops and it wouldn’t be hard to rout them. However, I knew the danger of the Jinetes and the Almughavars. The javelins could be more dangerous than arrows sometimes. “Let’s be ready to make them silent”, I thought.
My army was very simple. Crossbowmen and spearmen. The French classic art of war. They were just lacking some heavy cavalry. However, I was relatively confident on my crossbowmen, and on my trap, led by Olivier. I was waiting them with a smile.

Charles de Bouillon. ASSASSINATED. "Friend"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Charles was the governor of Toulouse citadel and then the governor of Zaragoza. Charles was my only real “friend”. He liked me and I could trust him. He was not a warrior, but he was a clever leader, knowing a lot in the domain of diplomacy, economy and management. He had saved me from Louis’s sword. He had finally been killed by that bastard Norbert when I was away in Italy...
I rode a last time in front of my army when the looters were approaching, thirsty for my blood. I spread the orders to keep the lines like a massive shield. Everything should go well… They were peasants and looters after all. It might be an easy victory.
The foes were not far away now. I could hear their voices and shouts. They seemed confident on their luck. Poor ignorant…
I shouted at them: - “Hey… I let you a last chance to surrender. Nobody of you will be killed or captured. I’m not a killer and I don’t want to see your blood flooding on that field. Think about your wives and sons. Could you help them better if you are dead tonight? Could you feed them better if the vultures would scatter your bones tomorrow? I’m not a foreigner and I just want the peace here. Let me a chance to achieve it… “
I was not really convinced about the power of my speech against such an uneducated crowd. However, I knew that it was a good thing for my soldiers to know that I’m not just a Pope criminal and that I could have some humanism thoughts sometimes.
As planned, they replied with an animal roar, just before to rush towards my lines. My men were ready and insulted at the foes before the impact.
The foes suddenly stopped and the terrible Jinetes emerged from their lines, ready to throw us some deadly javelins. I didn’t wasted time and urged my crossbowmen to go above the spearmen and to start shooting…
They did it quickly and in good order. I was pleased to see that those so called “unexperimented” militia troops were reacting to my orders like the best warriors.
The Jinetes were behaving like usual. Rushing toward our lines, throwing their Javelins and rushing back. But was it the best solution for them? I wasn’t sure. My crossbowmen weren’t worried and didn’t rout. A lot of my soldiers were injured and even fatally hurt but they kept their shooting frequency.
My spearmen were watching the carnage behind their shields. It was not the case of Inigo. The miserable looter’s lord was now above his troops, trying to motivate them. The problem was that he was an easy target for the arrows of my men. Moreover, the sun was blinding him and his Jinetes.
Inigo was facing his death. I still don’t understand why this lord had behaved like that, like a pure idiot. Definitely, the Spanish were not the best of the strategists. It didn’t take too much time to happen…
The arrows won the battle… and Inigo kissed for the last time the Iberian dust.
The foes spearmen were just rushing toward our troops when their lord found his death. I remember them hesitating on what to do next. They finally agreed to continue the fight. What a horde of idiots…
I understood it was the perfect time to launch the secret charge. I took my ivory horn and rang the signal.
Olivier appeared with his light cavalry in the top of the hill.
The foes didn’t see them. Anyway, it was too late for them. They were still running to reach my lines of spearmen when Olivier charged their back soldiers. The Almughavars were the first to be decimated.
Olivier didn’t let them any chance to escape.
At the same time, I ordered my spearmen to charge their lines. The foes just understood what occurred to their friends when they saw me and my spearmen rushing against them. It was too much for such a peasant troop. They rooted like a single man.
It was like a race for kids. They were as inoffensive. The problem was that I wasn’t there to congratulate the first one. I was there to slaughter that scum. I was there to show that I will never tolerate any peasant to rise against me.
The poor runners were hunted by my fresh troops, but also targeted by my crossbowmen, eager to participate to the bloody banquet.
That time, the best runners of them could still have a little hope of escaping. But when they saw the Olivier’s cavalry surging, they understood that God was not their friend anymore. They could just weep before to be slain like little animals.
None of them escaped that bloody field during that bloody day. The luckiest of them were slain by the prestigious Durandal.
Far better than an unknown arrow in the back…
“Another victory for the Kingdom. Another butchery for me and my men” I thought when I was still cutting some idiot heads.
Some of my men remained in the field, but they weren’t a lot and it was like nothing had really happened, apart the fact that the Iberian population had been reduced by some little thousands of fool people.
After two days cleaning and robbing the corpses, we started again our long walk toward Paris. My soldiers were happy. They were confident on my command talents and they were ready to follow me, even against the so dangerous Louis The Merciless.

Ah ah, yes, Philippe was surprised and annoyed about those people ever standing against him.
He is fed up with those idiots who think they can cope with him.
But you know, his "cooler" brother is much more evil than Philippe.
Even if Philippe is changing...

Nice battle! If I were Louis I would start to pay attention to what happens in the south....
Thanks. It was an extremely easy battle you know, but important for Philippe because it is the beginning of his trip to Paris...
You are right, Louis should really pay attention to what happens in the south, or it would be too late.
I'm going to update tomorrow...
Thanks again for your support, and to all the readers, feel free to comment if you have any feeling about the story, the battles, the pictures, anything...
I would be pleased to know your thoughts at that time of the story.
Philippe Capet, adoptive son of the French King. However, my real name is Muhammad Sahadeddine. I’ve been adopted because of an amazing coincidence. I hope to become a hero of Chivalry, and help the poor and the orphans. I know, I’ve read a lot of hero stories, but I’m a dreamer… I’m 28 years old and I am the Heir of the Kingdom, after the death of my father. I’ve killed the Pope myself, and destroyed the entire Papal States. I’m back in France, suceeded to be the new leader of Zaragoza, despite my state of outlaw. After being captured by Louis's army, I suceeded to flee and to save Zaragoza from the Spanish siege. I raised some loyal troops and I decided to assault Paris and Louis.
Louis the Merciless. KING of the Kingdom. "Brother"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
It is my elder “brother”, and the King of France. He is a very skilled and fearful warrior. He can be qualified as a “butcher”. He is my worst enemy since he raped and killed my first love Hélène. He is in Paris, and after some hard times, it seems that he took back his authority. He sent me some extermination forces.
Michel. "Brother"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
It is my second “brother”. He is one year and a half more than me. We were very good friends during our childhood, but it seems that these happy times are over. Michel is the new unofficial leader of the Kingdom, because he had managed to use the lords as a tool to take the command of the Kingdom, against Louis. I’m the heir just because of his will. He is working in the shadows and is potentially more dangerous than Louis himself.
Charles. "Nephew"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
It is the only child and son of the king Louis the Merciless. He was supposed to be the rightful heir but because of Michel plans, I’ve stolen him the title. He should be very angry… Maybe because of that, he decided to be a rebel in order to steal his father’s crown, and had been thrown by Louis in the Paris dungeon. He has been reconciled and is one more trap in my road.
Clara. "Wife"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
It is my official wife. She is the daughter of the Spanish King and thanks to that marriage, I’m now considered as a real noble and I’m a little more protected against the anger of Louis. She is definitely ugly and I absolutely don’t want to sleep with her. The problem is that she deeply loves me. Despite the nightmares, I made her pregnant and I let her in Toledo. She gave birth to Philippe, my first son.
Margit. "Secret love"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
She is my deep love. Nobody knows that, even my close friends. She is beautiful and clever. She is a Hungarian princess. Now that the problems had been solved with Olivier, I spent wonderful times with her. She has just givenbirth to our first son, Raoul.
Norbert. "Michel spy"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
He is the messenger who just taught me the amazing news of the death of my father, and that I’m the new Heir of the Kingdom. He is the personal spy, and maybe assassin of Michel. He was sending me Michel orders. He killed my dear friend Charles de Bouillon and try to slay me. I hate him…
Olivier de Beziers. "Friend"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
He was one of my loyal generals. He is quite as young as me and a very good warrior. Moreover, he seems very clever and he helped me to convince the army that the Pope Alexander was an enemy. After some love problems we finally overcome, he is from now on my "compagnon d'arme".
Bertrand du Guesclin "Friend"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Bertrand du Guesclin is a local noble from brittany, who became the governor of Pamplona. He believed in my dream to found a new Kingdom and he became one of my close friends. He helps me more than everyone else to build an alternate Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula
Arnoul de Penthièvre "Personal spy"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Arnoul is my best personal spy. He was previously spying for Philippe Auguste, my father. He is extremely experimented and plays a key role in my chess game against Louis and Michel. This guy saved me when I was the prisoner of Baudouin, waiting for my death...
Philippe Auguste the Chivalrous. DEAD in battle. "Father"
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
He was my adoptive father, but also the French King. He loved the Chivalric Code, and enjoyed good tournaments. He was a wise ruler and French people liked him a lot. He died in battle, against Flanders, trying to defend Paris.

The winter was beginning when we reached Narbonne. The town was the same than when I sailed to Rome. Nothing really happened there. We took some days to resupply. I was talking about the new improvement to build in the town with some of the local governors – loyal to me – when a messenger rushed in the room and sent me a letter.
Of course, it was not a love letter… Another letter of dark news, as usual. Zaragoza was besieged, just few days after I left the city. And the foes were the Spanish. As I had previously planned, those bastard cowards had waited for my departure to besiege Zaragoza.
Even if it was extremely bad news, it was not as worse as the last time. Indeed, that time, my love Margit and my child were with me. I didn’t make the same mistake and took them with me during my trip to Paris. My objective was to let Margit and the kids in Toulouse, and then fight Louis in Paris.
At the opposite, I let Clara in Zaragoza and I must admit that a smile appeared in my face, thinking about the monster besieged for the second time by her native Kingdom. Ah ah ! I even laughed about that.
However, the real problem was that if Zaragoza would be conquered by the Spanish, Pamplona would be in peril, and then Narbonne, and even Toulouse. I strongly hoped that Bertrand could manage a coordinated counter attack against the Spanish and push them back far in their desert Kingdom.
I had no choice that time. I couldn’t come back. It was too late. The winter had nearly begun and I didn’t have so much time to reach Paris with my troops. Moreover, I was betting on a surprise effect and I couldn’t afford to lose it. I was forced to leave the French Iberian Kingdom. My fate was no longer there. It was in Paris, at the edge of my beloved Durandal, with some Louis’s blood on it.
The three following days, I stayed in Narbonne in order to organize the defenses. I also ordered the sending of some Narbonne troops to Zaragoza in order to help. Then, I quickly left Narbonne, heading to Toulouse with my troops. We walked some days before to reach the citadel. It was the first time since my youth I came back there. 10 years already…
My head was full of memories. I remembered Helene. I remembered Charles de Bouillon. I remembered my young friends I trained with. So many dead now… When I arrived for the first time with Philippe the Chivalrous in Toulouse, I was thinking about glory and chivalry. Now, I was coming back with the death behind me. My dreams of helping the poor and the orphans were gone with the battles, with the wounds and the death cries…
I was not a child anymore. I was 28,and a war leader…
I was not a dreamer anymore. I was the Heir of the Kingdom, and I had a King to slaughter…
The heavy drawbridge fell and I entered the citadel at the head of my troops.
