I haven't heard about a city called Bulgary in Italy, but all Bulgar-related toponyms in Italy are considered to be either from the times of the early Bulgar settlements there (Alziok/Alzek's ones in Lombard times; see Vincenzo D'Amico) or from the later times of the spreading of Bogomilism (often called "the Bulgarian heresy" and its proponents often called "Bulgarians"; see f.e. this documentary (a little bit of self-advertising )). Nothing related to the Slavs as such...

Man i thoth you guys are seriuos!! And you are pronounceing history?

    Here it is:

It should be added that toponyms in Italy that may suggest a Bulgar presence - e.g. Bolgare in Lom-bardy, Bolgheri in Tuscany and Monte di Bulgheria - are probably not related to the earliest Bulgar migrations, but either to late Mediaeval immigrations from the Balkans (when the Slavic and Albanian presence was also established or re-established), or to earlier Christian heretics (e.g. in the 12-13th centuries the later were called Bougres in France, from when the English coarsity "bugger" de-rives). There is also a small possibility that some such toponyms in Italy may come from the Albanian word bulgër or bujgër, denoting a type of plant.

("Ignote colonie slave sulle coste del Gargano", in: G. Rohlf, Studi e ricerche su lingua e dialetti d'Italia. Firenze, 1972).

It might be possible, yes. This has puzzled the old researchers too - the highest ammounts of Bulgar toponyms (and surnames) are in Northern Italy, while the early Bulgars are supposed to have settled in the Benevento. So it's possible that the ones in Northern Italy are from later times, probably due to the Bogomil movement.

Links to about a dozen YouTube vids, with almost no comments or ones that usually had nothing to do with the thread ("Bulgarians are not Slavs", "Bulgarians are not Tatars", "See here for Bulgarian-Thracian connection" and others like that).

As they say the internet can be a great learning tool or a great garbage heap. This type of amateur made youtube videos fall into the second category. Show me proper-made documentaries. Im sure there is a seed of truth in the topic but this is not the way to show it. I think this guy just wants people to click on the links to get viewer numbers up on youtube.

As a Bulgarian I consider myself from Slavic origin. By living in Bulgaria I can surely say that modern Bulgarians speak a Slavic language (as I can pretty much understand what other Slavs like Serbs and Russians are saying). The culture and traditions in Bulgaria are identical to the Slavic ones. I once made some research about the DNA of the Bulgarians and it turned out that it's closest to Macedonian and Serbian ones.
There is no such thing as Mongolo-Tatars here. This theory was invented by Tito and company to distance the Bulgarians from the ex-Yugoslav nations (especially Macedonians). The sad thing is that today there are people who still believe in it.
As for the Ancient Bulgarians- nobody can be sure about it. They were steppe people, but their origin will never be known until some real proofs are found. Until then, I will not believe in any of the theories of Iranic/Turkic origin.
