    Icon1 The Sleeping Giant

This now closed thread is in a large part the history of The Great War mod compacted into a single entity.

The posts in this thread tell a story of a small mods journey to becoming one of the largest, ambitious and yet most successful mods for Total War to date.

From gathering initial idea's and concepts, discussion of the famed startpos, the sadness and worry of losing a team leader, joy of gaining new team members, and the inevitable euphoria of seeing great ambition turned into a mod, this thread has seen it all.

It's thanks to every single person who posted in this thread in the early days that allowed us to show our great following to the admins of TWC and gain us our mods own sub-forum, from which TGW has developed hugely.

It's thanks to every single person who posted in this thread that gave each of the development team the motivation to keep working.

And it's thanks to every single person who posted in this thread, and all others like this, that TGW is the mod it is today, so thank you.

    Nice. Very Nice.

Love how you have implemented an entirely new tactical system from scratch.

    Hey there mate!
I have been greatly anticipating this mod, alas, I cant seem to install this properly. I place both pack files into my data folder and remove all the other mods present. I have also removed the script that runs the mod. Can you please assist me to get the mod up and running? It would be greatly appreciated. Great work and keep it up!
    Yours sincerly,

Ok yes it seems that I slightly dazy today and didnt posses the brain to check a custom battle, I just did and I say it is excellent. With alot more work and effort on the counterparts of future modders this should be extremely sucessful! I also know a link to a guy who made WW1 flags be implemented into Napoleon, I think if you are going to use them ask his permission.

I would just like to say that this is going to take a hell of a long time, you must consider the campaign map, the gameplay, reskinning, adding new units, flags etc. This project will need alot of people. Just remarking on your general prospects for the future! Cheers!

I have been waiting for a proper foray into this era for quite some time now and I am pleased to see someone is finally taking the first steps.I am also pleased to see that you are not hung up on the notion of trench warfare being the end all be all of the combat,as the early period of the war was incredibly fluid and bombastic, lending itself to tactics better fit for the Franco - Prussian war.I wonder though, when you finally do get about to skinning, will you be using the rather more flamboyant uniforms of the wars early days or will we see the drab and dirty uniforms that arose when the reality of the conflict finally set in???

    Oh really nice man !

I think that the cloth of the landwehr, in grey or dark green instead of blue, and the helmet of the Bavarian infantry with a pike on it instead of the banana thing could be a first nice skin for the german infantry of the WWI.

Fascinating. I'm very eager to try this one out tonight!
Can I ask about compatibility with other mods. I guess it can not be used with mods which affect BAI, and CAI (like Nap Order of War). What about No Dust, Heartbreaks Custom Battles unlocker, the various uniform mods, etc?

more precise cannons with interesting ammunition, our bayonette guys shooting like in the beginning of 20th century but in lines...super
now u just need to reskin the actual units, add some animations to the reload (cleaning the ...wan$#% action reload) , add tanks and air support!

I must say, I am very pleased with all of the support this very early phase mod has gotten, and so I will definitely be continuing with it.

There, however, some startpos issue I am having a hard time with, that means there are a few things that I could use some help with. So if anyone is interested in ‘joining the team,’ here is what I need --

Someone who can rework the Startpos and set starting diplomacy. I need to give Prussia a lot of German territory so they start off with at least rough 1914 borders. I also need to set Prussia and Austria in a very strong alliance with military access, and they need start in war against Britain, Russia, and France.

If you know anyone who can work their way around the startpos to do these things, either let me know or send them a PM. Thanks.

If you mean on the campaign map, much, much better than vanilla.

The AI has been set to be much more aggressive, meaning they attack more often. The AI has also been set to give a much, much higher priority to recapturing lost provinces.

This creates an AI that will not relent if it has the power to keep fighting.

On BAI side of things, the AI seems much more competent given that maintaining standard 'lines of battle' is no longer that important. Now the focus is on attack 'this or that' point, or sending in an attack 'here or there.' The AI seems to be able to function better. Also, given that artillery is much more important now and can fire over obsticales, the AI's shots won't get caught on the terrain, which the AI, in vanilla, couldn't seem to understand.

Overall, it is, I believe, a much more challanging experience.
