The problem with the Wars of Beleriand is the Doom of Mandos. Mandos had foretold that Noldor will be defeated and that Morgoth can only be overthrown by the aid of the Valar. For the sake of the game we could forget about the Doom of Mandos and make Melkor (as 100 hp general with Balrog bodyguards and zero movement points) beatable. The alternative is to have a time limit. If the player survives the year 545 (that is when Dagor Dagorath began) then the campaign is won. I personally prefer the first option because this is after all just a game and most people do not want to play a game that cannot be won. And beating a 100 hp general is hard enough imo, especially since the Elves did not have siege equipment.

You can do both things, instead of "Long" or "Short campaign" at beginning, you put "Lore" or "Free". Then you set victory conditions for short campaign as vanilla (hold x regions, exterminate y faction) and call it Free mode. For Long campaign you set vctory conditions as "Hold 200 regions", wich cannot be reached, and then you make morgoth invincible. At a certain turn (when you want the game to end) if the player is still alive, you call the victory command via campaign_script.

What would be fun would be if you reached the end time then wave after wave of Morgoths legions would sweep from the North to utterly crush all opposition. I think it would be more fun to be obliterated than just ending it.
Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.

Probably would be way more fun. Then, if you could survive to a certain date (and do a certain event, like build a ship or take a diplomat to certain spot on the map), you can recreate the valar coming in their wrath to put down Melkor. So there, if you can survive to that date, then a script spawns huge elite elven armies on the western shore that then make a beeline for Melkor's stronghold. And your victory is being able to fight alongside them in the Final battle.
And if you decide to play as Melkor, when you've conquered X number of regions, the same script happens and you have to fight for your life to maintain your kingdom.

I like the ideas being toyed with here. One does not just ignore The Doom of Mandos.

    I really like this idea.

Sounds like a good idea - proving there's such unbalance that Morgoth will always kick everything into oblivion; perfectly sutiable as it's the first Dark Lord we're talking about but risk to be quite unsuitable for a game. The player should hae the option to change the history somewhat after all

Way back it was discussed or perhaps even hinted (cant recall) that if Morgoth had the upper hand (as in big time) then the West would come interventing. That's a much better solution as it allows for more dynamic and random campaign games; while the aim for good factions for sure should be to survive a certain time with a certain amount of provinces or "beat" Morgoth - in the situation the Siege of Angbad has to be counted as a victory. If Morgoth then in the ending video or something get bullied by the other valar is fine, but in a game where evil factions aint immensly strong apperance of Western forces just will not be very fun.

Maybe a script or something when choosing a faction different than Angband.

"Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Feanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from theWest unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossessed shall they be for ever.

"Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death's shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Ea, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken."

Well technically Mandos did not say that they cannot defeat Morgoth...

No, Manwë says that earlier. I just felt like posting The Doom of Mandos cause it is so epic.

yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief
He was right was he not?...

    Anyway, here are the words of Manwë, through his messenger;
The lies of Melkor thou shalt unlearn in bitterness. Vala he is, thou saist Then thou hast sworn in vain, for none of the Valar canst thou overcome now or ever within the halls of Eä, not though Eru whom thou namest had made thee thrice greater than thou art.'
    Satisfied?

Hello is this mod still in action?
"The when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: "Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!" And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: "Auta i lómë! The night is passing!"" Officially, yes. Not much has been happening lately, but if we'd get a map soon, it'll be a huge step
