Go into your prefrernces.txt file and change the following:
from
SHOW_BANNERS:FALSE
to
SHOW_BANNERS:TRUE

Thanks it worked.
But i wonder how the unit banners and the minimal UI changed :S i didnt even touch that file.

DISABLE_ARROW_MARKERS - the annoying 'green arrows' that appear under a unit.
I'd also suggest making sure AUTOSAVE is set to FALSE and not the standard TRUE as it is known to corrupt save games (along with the use of the 'quicksave' facility (using a command key)).
