Default how should my army look like?

    I'm using:

    2 cavalries
    3 arty
    3 grenadiers
    3 light infantry
    4 line infantry
    4 skimishers
    1 general

I know I'm doing something wrong so please correct my unit selections!

For multiplayer or campaign? Multiplayer, I dunno. For campaign armies, I almost always go:

    1 general
2 arty - preferably horse, unless I can build howitzers
4 cavalry - lancers and projectile horse are my favorite for most of the game
    4 skirmishers
9 line infantry, with some replaced with elites or grenadiers whenever possible

I used that build in ETW and it hasn't failed me yet.

I have been pretty successful with this build
    1 general
3 artillery, usually a couple heavy calibre guns and a howitzer.
4 cav, 2 light units like hussars and then usually 2 units of heavy cav like curasier or house dragoons. I rarely use lancers.
3 light infantry, I usually keep them grouped together in forests to blast at incoming armies.
2 grenadiers, I concentrate them on weak points in the line and usually keep them in reserve while my main line advances.
The rest of my stack is line infantry with guard units mixed in if I can.

    Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.

Pretty much along the same lines here, give or take a few variations later (elites, howitzers). I don't use the 'l337' units much, like to stick to the basics.

Alright, thanks for the suggestions guys!

I have no historical background about these troops so I pretty much just train one of each type and see how it goes (super casual here)! Should I bother with Light Infantry when I already have Line Infantry? What about Grenadiers... should I train them when I already have Skirmishers?

Line doesn't replace light troops. Each unit has a specific purpose in an army.

Light and skirmishers to harry and screen.

    Line to stand and die.

    Grenadiers to charge in.

    My setup:

    1 General
    2 Dragoons
    2 Hussars
    2 12 pounders
    2 Howitzer
    3 Light Infantry or
2 Light infantry and 1 Jäger
    8 Line infantry or
6 Line infantry and 2 Grenadiers or
    2 Guard/Elite Infantry, 6 Line Infantry

Depends on the nation and situation in my campaign, but pretty much this. Works for me.

    1 general staff & escort
    1 heavy cavalry troop
    2 light cavalry troops
    2 cannon batteries
    1 howitzer battery
    2 grenadier companies
    2 light infantry companies
9 line infantry companies (1 company will be Guards or an elite unit)

Of course I will vary every so often. For example if I know ill do being alot of sieges I will add more artillery and reduce the cavalry to maybe 1 troop of light cavalry only.

4 cavalry (two heavy and two light)
5 artillery (of which one or two are howitzers)
10 infantry (mostly line; some guard and light; no grenadiers)

    + general

My typical ETW setup was general, two light cav, two heavy cav, two cannon, two howitzer, two grenadier (or other elite infantry), and the rest line infantry. I'd occasionally replace two line infantry with skirmishers, but I always found my cavalry sufficient to counter the enemy's skirmishers, and the combination of cannon as well as howitzers provided better results than skirmishers in disrupting the enemy.

Light infantry can outshoot line any day of the week but falls quickly to cavalry and melee in general. Grenadiers wreck stuff in melee but fall quickly in a shootout because of their low numbers. Line are jack-of-all infantry who benefit mainly from a large size. Basically think of Infantry as being a balance between shooting and melee. The continuum goes as follows:

(shooting) - Skirmishers - Light Infantry - Line Infantry - Grenadiers - (melee)

Playing the Russian Campaign of the Coalition, my stacks generally look like this:

    1 General Staff
    3 Uhlans/Cossacks
    2 6-Pounder Horse Artillery
    2 12-Pounder Cannon Batteries
    3 Jager Regiments
    9 Line Infantry Regiments

I tend to stay away from Grenadiers or the more expensive cavalry units as I have found through experience that their jobs can be done cheaper and only slightly worse by basic line infantry or light cavalry.
