Definitely one of his best in his great career, georgus actors, wonderful soundtrack and cinematography. The Duellist is romantic, evocative, intense, a real masterpiece, second only to the giant Kubrick's Barry Lyndon

I gotta second this review of The Duelists. Outstanding film, and a bit of an underground hit among U.S. Cavalry officers still.
I will say that when I first saw it, it was after finding a used VHS of it on e-bay. When it came out on DVD and I saw the film as it was ment to be seen...wow! Its one of those movies that needs the widescreen format with sharp and rich color.

Yeah "The Duellists" was a pretty good flick, and I've only seen it from maybe 1/4 of the way through it. Plus, that was YEARS ago.
Never seen Barry Lyndon, but have heard it is pretty Epic.

Nice one thanks for posting!
That was pretty good, especially without the use of CGI...
Wow, nice to see you like people!
Mega Tortas thanks so much!
Bingo- The red army helped with all the big action scenes
The Russian DVD import is the best version of this picture too cause they actually like it over there. In the west it was a flop so the DVD they sell in the USA doesn't remaster sound or picture and looks horrible. The Russian import get's 5.1 surround sound and the picture is touched up a bit. I think it's cause the director is big in Russia as well.
When ever I need a quick fix and don't have time to watch the full picture, I usually watch this

Yea, for years I could only find Waterloo on "VCD" and the quality was pretty bad, less than VHS quality. The Russian DVD is quite good.
The film is a bit odd in some of its cinematography (like the frame only focusing on someone's oily T-zone for a fraction of a second) but the battle itself is such a spectacle. I was reading about the filming after looking at this thread, and the Red Army pulled out all the stops to film it. 22,000 soldiers, plus I believe another 5,000 cavalry. A full 2,000 were trained to actually fire muskets for the camera. Imagine the budget to costume all those ruskies!
Yea, its got some of the hokey war movie gaffs in there like cannon that don't recoil and everything fired from a cannon is a shell, but its still magnificent. Its ashame that most of my fellow Americans don't appreciate history; they don't know what they're missing. When you realize how facinating and important REAL LIVING PEOPLE were just a few short years ago, then it makes the mindless dribble of most pop culture look as meaningless as it is.
