Once the game is started does steam need to keep running to play a SP game? If not, is there a way to close steam without having to alt tab out of the game?

I think Steam has to be left running, either in offline or online mode. The couple of times I thought of ctrl+alt+del and then closing it, it caused a crash to desktop after certain events during the game. And I think using that method is the only way to close it without alt tab-bing out of the game.

Well, you can play in the off-line mode of Steam after you have installed and activated the game.
