Mass Effect 2 - Anyone died at the end yet?

Has anyone actually had their character die at the end of Mass Effect 2? I have heard it can happen but I have yet to meet anyone that it has happened to.

It has not happened to me personally but I do know that you actually have to plan on killing Shepard. Accidentally getting him/her killed is extremely unlikely if you play the game in a "normal" way.

There are some vids of it happening on YouTube. I think he dies if you don't have any upgrades to the Normandy or something, otherwise I can't imagine how.

Actually the easiest way is to bring two non-loyal characters on the final mission. So all you need is two total squad mates as not loyal.

The only thing that can kill Shepard in the end isthe loyalty of teammates, really. And the only ones that matter are the ones you bring for the final part of the mission against the human reaper. Whatever happens throughout the rest of the mission (specialists, squad leads, normandy upgrades...any of those) does not have any effect on Shepard's death in the end. All that matters is who you bring with you to fight the reaper, and if they are loyal or not. If both are loyal, Shepard will live. If one is loyal and the other isn't (and subsequently dies), Shepard will still live. If both are unloyal (and also subsequently die) then Shepard will die in the end. When Shepard jumps for the Normandy, he needs someone to help him up after he barely makes the jump. With at least one other squad member there who makes it, they are able to give Shepard a hand. If there is nobody aside from Joker, Shepard will die, because there is no one there to cover him AND pull him up. Joker can't do both at the same time.

I'm confused though. I only had Jack that wasn't loyal and after I went through the seeker swarm Thane was killed despite the fact that he was loyal. I don't get how that happened when others had no one die at all.

loyalty isnt all that matters. you also have to count in their individual skills and experience. samarra and jack, for example, has strong biotic powers, so it would be wise for you to choose them when your going through the swarm.

I had Miranda as my shield and Samara and Thane as my party members. All of them were loyal and Thane didn't make it which sucks cause he was one of my favorite characters. I definitely wasn't expecting it at all.

And at that, they have to be loyal too, or else someone will still die.


On one playthrough I let Miranda do it, so she can prove how awesome she is(n't). has it coming for her selfish proclamations as being good at everything.

it's not that hard to figure out who's better at what job. they tell you half the game how jack was built as the ultimate biotic. damn right she can do the job right.

garrus already had a team and bombed half of Omega, they were loyal to him so he's a def candidate to lead your second team.

and when it comes to tech for the tunnels, it's really between tali and legion. I always pick Legion... he's a damn robot who can hack things by just hovering his hands over a terminal. Plus he has a sniper rifle and he's made of metal.

Well I knew Samara or Jack were the best choices, but I had sex with Miranda and ever since then I had really been marginalizing her efforts during the suicide mission so I let her put up the Biotic field since she said she could do it lol, damn her she cost me Thane!!! Of course Jack wasn't loyal either so I couldn't pick her to do and Samara I was using in my party. I used Tali to go through the vents. And Garrus led my teams, as usual. In any case, Thane was one of my favorites so it really sucked having him get wasted =( .

Btw, what happens if you play again the 2nd time and import you ME2 character over again. You get all your stats and items etc, but how does it affect the story? You can go through and do everything different and have two separate exports for ME3 or what?

yea you start the story from scratch, so you can do anything you want. I think you keep some renegade/paragon points from the previous game? Or I forgot. In the end it will show up as another career profile, separate from the first.

I see. Cause I wouldn't mind playing with the same guy but have him go renegade path this time and mess around. I tried to play as fem-Shep, but it just wasn't working for me. I realized this before even rescuing Joker during the Normandy attack haha.

new game + is much more difficult than the first time through.

And I know you're some Tough Marine Guy™ who always plays a soldier, but you should try a sentinel, it's quite fun and really powerful.

I hate how we get to the character customization screen after having to sit through the whole Normandy attack.

I also hate how we don't know the details of our imported ME1 game until we load it up.

Well, a direct import from ME1 will recieve a paragon/renegade bonus for their first ME2 playthrough. Funny thing is though, if you take that character and start a second ME2 playthrough with them, they won't start round 2 with that paragon/renegade bonus from the import.
