Diplomats

A quick question about diplomats. I've been playing as the league of Ostermark for the past couple of days and I've noticed that I keep getting diplomatic missions to initiate relations with the Dark Elves, who are neutral to me. However, when I get my diplomat tere, there's a big x icon that doesn't let me interact wit the Dark Elves, as if they were my enemy. Is this supposed to happen? I think I've failed 3 or 4 diplomatic missions already, lol.

I think so. As I've seen, you can enter negotiations with factions allied with you only. I think this is to not to make unneeded alliances in game (although it's very annoying to get "mission impossibles" like that).

Not to mention that as a province of the Empire, you shouldn't be trying to have any diplomatic relations with the Druchii anyway..

IMO you should. Make demands towards them of become your vassal, declare war on every Chaos faction, give you all their money and some towns, then you can sit down, have a drink, some popcorn and watch them killing each other.

The battle lines are already clearly drawn. I don't see any reason for diplomats personally.

They are necessary for if you want to trade a settlement with an ally to meet victory conditions without making war with them.
