Something like this was proposed in the Curia a while back for all medals. I used that template with some modifications. It is a simple scheme, but effective and not confusing.
Would look good with my new badge proposal. lol

Awesome! These look great. Clean, simple, and really clear. Especially with your new badges. My only comment is that the screwdriver is a bit unclear – at first I thought it was some kind of club. Not sure how to fix it, you're the artist. Maybe if you turned it the other way, and made the tip flare out more prominently into a screwdriver shape.
How's this one Sim?
They are pretty nice and tidy. I like them. 2 suggestions... add a space between them say one pixel left or right side. Also By having the alpha lines that could be ranks or service signifies. Hope you dont mind Y.
IE:
3 mo would be
6 mo would be
9 mo would be
1 year would be
1 year 9 mo would be
Hmm. Still doesn't look too much like a screwdriver to me. How about a wrench instead? That would look much more distinctive.
Hmm. I think I prefer y2day's originals.
I'd prefer to have one badge mean a fixed period of time, so it's clear how many months it is at a glance.
Those look much more distinctive. So it's really a stylistic question at this point. y2day's design is much sparser, brighter, and more streamlined, yours is fancier and more subdued but more busy. Personally I prefer y2day's approach, but I'll present both of them in my Curia proposal and see which people seem to like more.
Some feedback on these first, though: I think a gear would be more distinctive than a screwdriver here for tech staff. Again, it's hard to tell that that thing is a screwdriver at this size. Also, for the Hex symbol, I'm not sure what that is inside the hexagon, but it draws your attention away from the hexagonal shape. I'd suggest removing whatever that is, leaving a plain hexagon in the middle so that your eye is drawn to the fact that it's a hexagon.
to me, at least, the eagle image is pretty clear and doesn't take any from it's hexagonal shape.
Also, It would probably seem pretty plain without anything in the middle. Considering that all the others have icons at their epicenter, If he were to take it out, it'd leave the admin badge (the most auspicious) quite bland.
but that's just my opinion
I like tzar's idea much more.
One suggestion though. Could you change this one:
Can you pleas try to put only one half of a star on the thing, so if you have two toghether it will look like one.
Here you go Sim.
Hope one of those work, if not let me know.

They look good to me, thanks again. This is my favorite:
Maybe if it were solid yellow without the visible holes, though? The other three medals are all untextured (as are all your other wrench examples, but I like this one's shape best).
I've posted the proposal, let's see how it goes.
Just saw this so I figured I would take a look.
Or even a gear, which could be in more of a square image. Lots of applications use a gear icon for option and configuration buttons. Obviously this one is a bit big but you get the idea...
The other thing you could do instead of multiple images is chevrons on top of an image.
Thanks Sim and GED I'll work on it.
Some more..

Really Basic WIP to show my idea : (just noticed there is some leftovers in the top corner)
One Golden "rank" = 9 months
One Silver "rank" = 6 months
One Bronze "rank" = 3 months
To make this idea work I would like some good bronze, silver and golden textures! And maybe some good pictures for a quill, screwdriver and mace? Well I'm not so good at googling
Thanks for the samples. It's hard to tell what that is at a glance, though. The image is too detailed for the size. Also, I don't think it would look as good arranged side-by-side as Tzar's or y2day's images: those line up seamlessly at the edges.
Thank you for these samples. As I said before, though, I don't like the color-coding we have now. I'd prefer a simple count to show you how long someone has served. Also, this is larger than I requested; the badges need to stay small because some people will have a lot.
