well the R7 isnt a good choice, simply put it packs an ULV cpu and its heavy for that kind of entry and usage

True, but then it is a budget question for Heinz. He has to compromise. So, Acer is one option within the price segment, maybe not the best ... but i7 ... What you think would be a good lappi with a Haswell and a GPU for him?

those sagers/clevo offer the best bang for the buck, thats why I mentioned those at first
but if for more known brands, then there isnt anything out there that I find particularly good in terms of bang for the buck with good build quality, that doesnt throttle or that has a good cpu + gpu combo, a lot of haswell models havent been launched, not that ivy had also a particularly good option
the models that have been released so far are really lack lusting, lets wait and see what dell xps and LG bring to the table, the envy is gone really replaced by the pavillion and the new models are that.
but aside that I really like the concept behind the r7, the execution that wasnt up to what I was hoping for, basically a 35/37w quad, lighter at 2kg and removal of that touchpad, it really is in a bad position.

Do you know when the stronger mobile Haswells enter the market?

what do you mean by stronger haswell? the quads have already launched and the high profile gaming options as well, the only powerhouses missing from the equation are the workstations
if weight is imperative the clevo w230st (13) and the razer blade (14) are good options, quad and 765m (about as good as a 560), aside that you enter the realm of the rmbp 15 and whatever gpu its packing
the envy is slated to receive the 750m and packs a quad, but its truly is just a new pavillion called envy
Asus is probably going to make something that throttles, they have launched a new N series notebook that is 15" and packs the 750m + quad, aside the dubious cooling I dont like the current Q&A of asus, we have to wait and see the U500 replacement, hopefully it wont throttle badly likes its brother, and the G series is really heavy and large
LG usually makes high end notebooks superbly, however mainstream is pure meh, thus Im still waiting for the P330 successor
Lenovo is going to keep investing on the very heavy and very problematic Y500, really just remove the ODD and put a 770m in there and call it day, no sli hassle, no micro stuttering, better battery life, better cooling and so forth
AW launched their tron esque things, I dont think that design will ever grow on me
acer needs something of better quality in the 15" realm or as a matter of fact outside the ultrabook range, they are supposed to release a 17" with the 780m, but I never went to check again how rumours are
sager/clevo launched, at least on paper, its entire line up
toshiba doesnt exist
apple is going to put the 28w ulvs on the rmbp 13 and will put the iris pro aka 5200 quads on the rmbp 15 along with some dgpu (I guess its the 750m or the 8870m)
dell we dont know how the xps 15 will fare this time around, maybe it will exist, or maybe we will try very hard to forget that it actually made into existence like we did last year
gigabyte is trying to enter the market, but with the ultrabook batteries that they put on their quad equipped notebooks makes for poor mobility and lack of availability is another problem, they say they will offer on amazon this time around
razer has updated their line up, the 17 is still meh and the 14 is crippled by its screen otherwise a very very must buy notebook, its still a good buy despite that. the only thing missing is the razer edge which is actually really interesting
thats about it for the notebook consumer, for enterprise lenovo started releasing something I dont know about dell and hp
in reality while haswell is very good for mobiles, the gpus didnt receive a new arch, today I heard the news of the upcoming 9970m in october, if its paper launch or not, that may explain the absence of the new macs (aside the paper launch of the 28w ulvs and the only next week shipping of the iris pro/5200 cpus), so october may well be when AMD releases the new GCN and the 9000 series comes to life

I see, thanks.
What I am doing or try to do at the moment is upgrading an "old" i3 Vaio (SSD, RAM, OS).
If successful, it may run some years more.
It's not my Vaio. I wouldn't buy a Vaio for myself ... .

I have made the automatic Crucial "test".
M4, 2x4GB SO-DIMM 204 pin DDR3 should according to their tool be possible and I expect Win8 to run although Sony does not give driver support in that case. The CPU is outdated and at the lower end. Still, I am optimistic it should work.

it should work, I think you can also get a i5 480m without much hassle (there are models with that so microcode should not be a problem), I think it uses a sata 3 interface and it can take up to 16gb of ram.
PS: you can also put a caddy in that notebook and use the ODD space for another HDD

Thanks for the hint with the caddy.
C: drive is 288GB (from Toshiba).
The notebook heats up badly. The ventilation appears to be insufficent.
HW Monitor for Core #0 56°C to 70°; Core #2 57°C to 70°C; C: drive 42°C - 43°C (i3 330M)
It runs with a diagnosis tool for 20 minutes.
I have to look if I can do something with the fan. I haven't opened it, yet.
I either replace the existing HDD with another larger one or with a 250~256GB SDD to relieve a bit the fan.
I don't want to bring your thread too much OT but the Cores are now at max 74°C in idle. Gosh that's evil.

you should check the fans for dust, the cooling on that S is really good enough

I've got two new potentianls for you bruders

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptop...130617121421:s
its in my budget. whatyareckon?
that msi chassis, aka the one from medion is a good one, however those prices makes me irrrrk, when are you going to buy it? if not immediately you might score better deals, the 670mx is worse than the 765m that is being so used on the new thin and light notebooks

why do you keep breaking my heart Karam?
because Im a heartless and my charms are known to all lesbots on earth, you should beat your wife, think like you are training a pet, it should work

Your budget is 850-900 pounds right? Then why not try something in MSI?

According to Nvidia this gives 65 fps in Skyrim, so it will run Witcher 2 perfectly as well. Definately better than 660M one you're showing us. Correct if i'm wrong MM.
and i was going to post this one
http://pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusV-15/
which is very similar, except the gpu is about 30-40% faster
regarding performance, the 128bit bus of the 765m doesnt do well on 1080p (inumerous hilarious threads about this problem of bus and bandwidth), but is very perfect for 900p (whence my unrelated love of the razer blade 14")
However its a better card if compared to the 670mx and does very close to the 675mx
