Default Request for Boiling Oil fix

    Greetings all,

Can anyone advise me how to make the Boiling Oil in Gatehouses more powerful?

As of now the area of effect is small and it only causes very few casualties, which I believe does not accurately portray the reality of this weapon.

It has been nerfed and I'd just like it to be back to normal.

Anyone know what stats to change? I've found references in the following:

    descr_boiling_oil
    descr_projectile
    descr_walls

    Cheers!

I also support this, and a nice hefty +rep, in addition to heart felt thanks will be given! I almost cried when I saw the oil splash off the six thousand or so Chaos Warriors who charged Karaz-A-Kazak.

I've checked all of these files earlier with the same ones but from Third Age and to my complete shock everything, every line, is the same. (I do hope I missed sth thoug)

Thanks for checking Grand Admiral. It does however seem strange. Perhaps there has been a tweak somewhere else?

Playing as the Dwarves I'm constantly being attacked and my enemies storm through the broken gates and lo and behold, only a few are dying when hit by boiling oil... now having played the Total War series since Shogun I know only too well the dangers of running a unit through the oil gauntlet and the boiling oil in COW is definitely not on a par with the other games.

I'd be really interested to hear the opinions of the mod developers on this point, as seeing even night goblins survive a direct hit and lose only 1-2 gobbos brings a tear to my eye.

Any ideas please? Even more appreciated would be mod teams views.

    Cheers all!

If you want, I can read up on how to "fix" the oil for you

I quite agree. I miss the the true causeway of death that the boiling oil was in Rome. It was one of the reasons you sticked clear of the gates. Now its not really something you consider at all.

Here, try this. I just edited the "descr_area_effects.xml".

Just extract to the "teutonic/data" folder

Holy Pilgrim, yes I think I'd not be alone in saying that a 'fix', or at least a return to normal, for the boiling oil, would be much appreciated.

    Cheers mate.

Edit: Have just seen your post whilst I was typing! I'll try that file now.

hmm, i wonder if it is possible to disable boiling oil for the enemy and enabling it for me. I don't want my men to die from such trivialties.

    Holy Pilgrim,

The modified file you posted does not seem to have fixed the effectiveness of the Boiling Oil.

Having fought many sieges when using it what it does do is have a far greater tendency to burn rams aas they are destroying the gates, which then funnels all the enemy to ladders and towers...

Any ideas on a different fix?

    Cheers.

There is no other way. I've checked this file with the same file from M2 and all Kingdoms campaigns plus with Third Age and SS and the lines for burning oil are all the same. Heck, I even increased it to <kill_damage>1.5</kill_damage> and orcs burn beautifuly. You could lower hit points of gates though. AI would brake them faster and the rams would not be destroyed (in most battles).

Pilgrim, it seems my artillery for the County of Wissenland is hardly doing any damage to the enemy lines since I applied your fix. Could you upload the original file, if possible?

Edit: It seems the Empire Mortars were affected. I did a custom battle with cannons against a bunch of weak units. Out of all the mortars, the top kill count was eleven. I had maxed chevrons on them as well.

Artillery shouldn't be affected, but I'll check mine to make sure

Hit Points, IMHO, is what's causing the issue. For example, a 3HP creature can still survive a hit from a Cannonball with no defence, but a 1HP creature with Maxed defence will still die from said cannonball. 2HP Orcs etc going through gates will lose a hit point from the Boiling Oil, but otherwise, unless they've already lost a hit point, then there won't be any effect.

I've yet to see any real negative effect in sieges tbh in Cry Havoc! (I'm building up my mod from Vanilla, and have removed all HP's - even bodyguards), so I think it must be that Hit Points causes the lack of damage being done.

    Grand Admiral,

Perhaps something else is wrong in my game then as the Boiling Oil kills very few enemies when they run through it.

Will revert to original file I guess.

I have a feeling it might be related to finding ways to keep invisible units in the game without too many burning dead bodies going around.

If you notice dead units who get burned under the gatehouse arent charred but you see them on fire before they die.

most attempts at invisible units usually results in battle crashes when an invisible soldier catches fire.

Notice no flaming arrows for archers either.
