Default Gallery of the Mighty: Political and Military Portraits 1618-1918

Be sure to check this post periodically to see who has been added!

This is a place for those interested cataloging history to contribute single posts with pictures and paintings of one historical person, per post, from the era spanning 1618-1918. This period is chosen precisely because it begins with the opening of a devastating war, and ends with the closing of another. Also, depictions created before A.D. 1600 are often too vague or generic to be of any historical use here; thus, our range is the Thirty Years' War to the First World War.

Naturally, there will be no photographs of generals or kings from before 1840!

Only one post in the entire thread may be founded in the name of X General, civil servant, Prime Minister, King, Queen, or Emperor. We need a large album of photos for the study of the evolution of clothing styles, weapons, automobiles, carriages, building-styles, etc. through this time.

Use whatever system of organisation you wish within your post dedicated to X, Y, or Z. Be sure to use spoilers for huge pictures! If you feel so inclined, you can post the dates of birth and death. Please feel free to discuss the leaders at your leisure.

    General Rules:

    1. The subject's portrait/bust/photograph must have been made between A.D. 1618-1918

    2. The subject must have some renown; if you can find a history book about the subject, it is a worthy person.

    3. You may post as many people as you wish, as long as they are separated by multiple posts and are not lumped into one.

I have the idea in my head that this will extended back to the 18th, or perhaps the 17th centuries in terms of content. For the moment, however, we should keep it in a condensed area of 100 years. The point is just so that we can make a large album of photos to study clothing styles, weapons, automobiles, carriages, building-styles, etc. as they progressed during the 19th century.

Yes, my friend, but only if each person you feature has his own post; i.e., Post 46 for X and Post 13 for Y. It is easier to index that way.

You might want to give a small line of explanation, so those interested in a certain era or nation can know who they are dealing with.

I've edited the First Post for clarity.

    You like an anti-monarchist, eh?

He was monarchist, and then anti-monarchist. I am realistically libertarian, but I like European monarchies of the 18th and 19th centuries, even though I'm not sure they would apply in today's world. Venizelos was very Jeffersonian, as am I. I added more pics, including some unusual ones(a wax figure.) He looks very Amish in the last photograph.

Be advised that I've moved the period back and forward. It now includes the early Baroque and Early Modern Periods of culture and warfare, respectively. It should be wider and more inclusive for those who are bored by the Victorian Era, now. I thought these would be good date, because 1618 saw the beginning of nations and monarchies that lasted up to 1918. The First Romanovs came to power in Russia in 1613, and were wiped out in 1918. The Holy Roman Empire lost its last real power starting in 1618, and its legacy was destroyed forever in 1918.

I could go on, but you probably see the reasoning for my dates now.

There better not be any Orléanists watching, sir! I agree with you entirely, however. When the original House of Bourbon was finally gone in 1830, the next 18 years just weren't the same.

Or the next 180 years, for that matter .

Oh, just noticed that you extended the time period to 1618. I might have chosen someone else then!

Argh! You can choose a million others, my friend. Simply make sure no one else has taken them, whenever you do post another.

It should be Kingdom of Greece, or Kingom of the Hellenes, for Venizelos.

I was under the impression that the gentleman became P.M. of Greece in 1910, after the Monarchy was abolished? My understanding of Greek history is very bad, however. Regardless of that, the majority of his time as Prime Minister appears to have been in the 1910's and 1920's, after the Monarchy?

Leave it to stubborn me to contest the history of Greece with a Grecian.

Well, the monarchy was very on-again off-again from 1910 to 1946, but the king was back at least in 1915.
