Re: Save issues
You need admin rights to save. Can you log in as administrator?

Re: Save issues
Go to the C: drive icon in computer, right-click it, in the security tab, click advanced, click ownership, and make yourself owner of everything on there.
Then when it's done, you have to get out for it to take effect, then go back into the security tab and make which user you are has full admin rights.
If not, click advanced, and in the next screen, make so.
You may have to do this all the way down to the Saves folder.
Before I installed the game, I disabled the UAC and I have not had that problem.

Re: Save issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975787. I have mine slid all the way to the bottom. I also have my own third party firewall and antivirus.
One lady to keep her son out of some of her stuff finally had to give hime ownership fo the Sega folder get his saves to work.
Since I am the only one on my computer, and I take precautions beyond Microsoft's, I pretty much discount their security layer for my own personal use.

Re: Save issues
It has nothing to do with it. The key is only used playing online.
You are going to have to do some research in Microsoft's Knowledge Base and ask their support people. This is purely Vista/7 UAC problem.
Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode?
I had it running on Vista Basic and didn't have this much trouble.

Re: Save issues
Right-click the icon, there is a compatibility tab. Set it for XP SP3 (I think), and see if that works.

Re: Save issues
The Medieval II Total War icon on your desktop.
Right-click it, click properties, and you will have six tabs.
Click security tab, check your user out of those listed, and in the list below, see if under "allow", full control is checked along with modify, read, read and execute, and write. If not, you do not have admin rights to do anything but play the game.
If so, compatiblity mode won't help.
