All Your Things Belong to Us

This, they truly believed both mandate and destiny. Literally "to take everyone's things"
    - Medieval Historian, regarding the Kingdom of Massyli

Settings as shown. I usually think that Hard campaign is harder than Very Hard, but since some people think otherwise, whatever I guess.

It's nice that on VH factions hate you even more and will be even more enthusiastic about lining up for the abattoir that is known as a player army. Let's get this rolling!

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a year of war, the King of the Massyli fell ill.

The Carthaginians demanded money and men to fight the Romans.

He had both of these, though not in abundance.

He had a fever dream the night after their officials dragged him, haggard and pale, out to hear their demands.

As a KING, there was nothing which he was not entitled to take.

    Spoiler for Update 1
The King did not know who to trust. Other than a near relative, he was the only noble. His men were all young footsoldiers who were still loyal to him, rather than Carthaginian coin. Only a small few had actual arms (shield and sword). The others had only knives and hunting weapons like slings and bows.

We struck quickly, and took a small town along the coast. It had been ours, once, but Carthage took it from our ancestors. It was now returned to its rightful owners.

A little further along the same coast was a larger settlement, Hippo.

Under guise of marching to fulfill Carthage's odious demands for men, we struck quickly before the governor suspected anything.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0015.jpg

The people of the settlement were frightened to see our lord abruptly overthrow the Carthaginian puppet who had been controlling them.

Possibly taking us for raiders from a foreign land, they offered us coin to leave them alone. This we were glad enough to do.

We quickly liberated two small settlements (groups of buildings, really) that were on the outskirts of Carthage's direct power.

Then we stood outside the great city itself. Carthago.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0020.jpg

Our King demanded their surrender. They laughed. He ordered the attack.

The timing was good. The soldiers had left to Iberia and Sicily on war - where we would have gone had our king been cowardly (sane, some would later say).
    Spoiler for This Is Carthago!
    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0021.jpg

A group of the "Sacred Band" blocked the way in. Their large white shields and beautiful armor were impressive.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0022.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0023.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0024.jpg

They were not quite as impressive once dead, however.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0025.jpg

The men entered unopposed. Several of the hoplites were still alive, and had to be "put down" by the knife.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0026.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0027.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0028.jpg

One of Carthage's wealthy men had a group of his men meet us. Also mounted on horses were more of the "Sacred Band".

    We utterly decimated them.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0029.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0030.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0031.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass1-0032.jpg

Our King had the senate of the Carthaginians gathered together at sword- (and knife-) point.

Understandably, they demanded an explanation for our "barbarianism" as though we had not taken over their city.

Our King replied to them only one line:

"All your things belong to us!"

He then ordered them all killed.

    Spoiler for Enforcing Independence

Some of the local citizens did not at first understand our intent.

When we destroyed their Academy, it became obvious that we were not interested in simply turning into Carthaginians. The populace then had to be forcibly subdued.

Many of them were sent as slaves to Kirta. However, our King decided that Carthago was in a good location.

We had to secure Africa first, of course.

However, having overthrown our "masters", he had set his eyes upon that which had been fought over so often, and so many of our kinsmen had marched off to, never to be seen again.

    Sicily, of course.

The "New Carthaginians" (as known by the Romans and Epirotes) were on the rise.

    ---------

(Yes, it's funny that the Enemy General Killed message seems to think the player faction is Carthage. Heh.)

    Spoiler for Update 2
Update 2: Taking Africa For the King

Fresh from looting everything in Carthago, the army went on to take nearby Utica.

Money was flowing into the kingdom coffers as well, a good ten thousand coin per month (actually ~40K/turn).

Further down the coast, the roaming army captured Hadrumentum and added it to the Kingdom.

Some foreigners were also evicted from their small village.

They seemed to prefer charging in a disorganized mess into our fire and were uickly tripped up by the crossfire.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0015.jpg

One of the Carthaginian nobles made a stand in a small village. We prepared to finish him off.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0016.jpg

Our men routed his unreliable Libyan hoplites using close-fire routines.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0017.jpg

Both our generals took their men into a massive cavalry battle against the enemy horse. Spears were flung and also used in fighting.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0018.jpg

The enemy general thought to sneak out from another way and attack the men. However, he, too, suffered from close-fire.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0019.jpg

As the enemy general ran for it, our king backed off. The enemy horse, thinking victory in their grasp, rushed forward into the fire of over 1000 slings and were horribly annihilated.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0020.jpg

The general did not excape either.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0021.jpg

    Victory was ours!

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0022.jpg

At this point, some strange ships, with foreign men arrived on our shores.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass2-0024.jpg

    They stole the King's village!

For this they must all be killed!

    Those slingers sure are potent!

I'm enjoying this so please keep it up......and tbh I'm a little surprised how easily you romped through NA, especially on VH/VH.

    Spoiler for Update 3
Update 3: Out! Get Off Our Land!

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0001.jpg

On our way back to reclaim the King's land, we ran across a small force of Carthaginians.

We had to engage them, of course - leaving them alone might give them the impression that our King was a careless person.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0002.jpg

The men formed up as the enemy approached our lines.

They then began a deadly shower of stones and rocks.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0003.jpg

The enemy general bravely attempted a charge, moving through a small thicket of trees along the way, making it hard for the men to target him.

He had good horses, as well - maybe even of our stock (Carthage liked to take our horses as well as our money and men).

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0004.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0005.jpg

The heavy losses inflicted by our brave slingers quickly doused any flame of hope the enemy might have had.

Survivors turned and ran for it.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0006.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0007.jpg

The enemy general survived both his foolishness and cowardice.

Either his armor or the trees saved him from the many missiles that had pursued him off the field.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0008.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0010.jpg

Our King also "made peace" with some group of people we had apparently been "at war" with.

We also tried to ask them for a map of their lands, which they gave us.

They're ... pretty far away. Still, good to know where more territories are for our King to conquer.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0011.jpg

    And now these Epeirotes.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0012.jpg

Our men easily out-ranged their javelin-armed horse.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0013.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0014.jpg

We also mauled two units of their hoplites.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0015.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0016.jpg

Then the captain fell. At that point, someone spotted a member of the nobility by his bodyguard's elaborate panoply.

Everyone fired upon the small unit of horsemen at once.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0017.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass3-0018.jpg

Revenge was gotten for this insult.

The "missile" duel was an odd form of warfare.

While it was common for men to fight solo combats with swords, this was something new ... men standing their ground and shooting back and forth at one another.

... heh. Someone said the same thing when I was spamming Keltoi slingers.

But slingers have a base attack of 2!! Not much lower you can take that. The real killer is of course the Armor Piercing and ability to add experience (in this case add attack as well) to up the damage.

We siezed the small settlement with little trouble, adding it to our King's domain.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0005.jpg

Back in Africa, Isaicas' small task force arrived in Lepcis Magna, Carthage's last holdout on the eastern part of known Africa.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0006.jpg

The usual starting missile warfare quickly reduced the defending javelinmen to a minor annoyance.

The men then entered via the broken gates.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0008.jpg

Somehow, one of the enemy units had found itself cut off from the settlement's square by the speed of our advancing men.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0009.jpg

When they tried to correct this mistake, our slingers shot them down.

    Africa was ours!

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0012.jpg

A small force of the hated Romans landed on Sicily and tried to take our land.

As the killers of so many of our King's subjects in Carthage's wars against them, it was necessary to demonstrate our new resolve as the true rulers of Africa and Sicily.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0013.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0016.jpg

A clean victory, and a wonderful start to a new conflict!

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0017.jpg

The Carthaginians' navy began a blockade of Sicily.

Fortunately, the King's position on the island was strong. Moreover, it was stable. We could hold out.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0018.jpg

Nonplussed by the lack of incoming reinforcements, our King led the way to Akragas.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0019.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0020.jpg

Taking the walls, we cleared the streets of Epirote defenders.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0021.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0022.jpg

Our Libyan allies then took to the city's center.

The small force of horsemen that tried to break their formation succeeded in doing so, but failed to defeat our men, formation or not.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0023.jpg

Their leader fell in the brave but futile effort.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0024.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0025.jpg

A small force tried to catch our men in a pincer between the walls and the square.

Unfortunately, our own men on the walls ensured that it was the greeks who were thus pincered.

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0026.jpg

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...Mass5-0027.jpg

The last defenders threw themselves into a furious hoplite fight, pushing back the Libyans.

This did not save them from the slingers.

lol - it almost starts to get boring the way you defeat one army after the other with those slingers

Btw, how many armies do you have in total (without garrisons)?

  12. #12

Default Re: [FOE] All Your Things Belong to Us - Update 5

I'd have to go and check, pretty sure there's only the one full stack army (on Sicily), and maybe two half stacks (one on Africa, another on Sicily) and a whole lot of slingers just running about. There's like tons of them running from Kirta (+attack) to Carthago (+experience). And the other way around too, just because I had to have ever more units of them.

Also, the slingers are basically better in close quarter combat than any melee units, as well. Compared to maybe 20 guys hacking/stabbing with swords or spears, you can have 100+ men deliver an armor piercing attack that ignores the (usually) substantial Defense skill. Especially fun in narrow city streets - until they run out of ammo. But meh, they're cheap, expendible and carry a lot of rocks.

    Spoiler for Update 6
Update 6: Freeing the Free Greeks

Moving eastward on Sicily, Gadusan, the acclaimed Prince of our people continued to claim victory for our king.

While the mercenary Samnites were capable of taking the walls from feeble greek archers, the hardier Oscan enemy was too much for them.

The Prince himself and his men brought down the enemy general in close combat.

Meanwhile, the last of the Oscans were cut down by the capable slingers, both from the opposing wall and the streets below.

Another settlement claimed for our King!!

At the North-West section of Sicily, a small fleet carrying some Roman troops and mercenaries was caught and sunk off the coast.

Word indicated that they were fleeing from Phyrros of Epirus, and had been blown astray by winds. Regardless, they now feed the fishes.

A stronger Carthaginian fleet was either landing reinforcements or evacuating the last of their troops.

Although defeated, the enemy nevertheless was able to escape with their transports and the men within. May they find the Romans "friendly".

Important portions of Sicily are not under our control. The Carthaginians still hold a major settlement which might be a forward base for future aggression against us.

The independent city of Messana sits across the water from Rhegion - which is Roman controlled.

And Syracuse continues to pay tribute to Phyrros rather than our King.

After deliberations, Gadusan decides that Messana is a good starting point, as they have no real allies in the area.

He moves and begins setting up a siege camp at a small town to the south.

The city sends its soldiers to defend its interests with force. Not exactly expected, but nevertheless welcome as it speeds up our King's plans - if indeed they are defeated.

The men form ranks on a small hill. The enemy approaches with some cavalry and are quickly shot down.

Realizing our superiority at range, the general leads a massive over-the-top charge.

His men will have to labor uphill against a driving rain of missiles.

Some of the heavier infantry, with good armor and large shields, are able to make it up without heavy casualties.

However, they might not have realized that the men ahead of them were aiming for the horsemen who guarded their general.

The first unit to reach our lines saw their fallen general on the ground just as the charge was about to connect.

They broke apart in confusion, their backs ripe targets.

The panic runs wild through the ranks, as men break formation and run.

On our side, cheers resound as the enemy are cut down in front of us.

    This is a great victory!

But wait! The enemy raises a battle-cry as their new leader takes to the field!

This time, he strikes at the flanks, and manage to scatter a unit of our slingers.

However, mercenary hoplites break his men and he is soon forced to flee.

The soldiers he had been harassing promptly repay the insult in full.

Some archers and artillery still hang on, firing bolts and arrows in reply to our stony assault.

It was a very weak and unimpressive reply.

Victory was truly claimed over the bodies of dead enemies!

Back at Akragas, our King was in council when he heard a horrible cry from the guards.

Carthage had arrived at our gates!

    Update 7: Beating the Blockade

Despite his grave situation, our King kept a calm demeanor.

Before the enemy could construct field fortifications, it was vital that the royal forces begin to test their strength and disrupt their plans.

Simply waiting for reinforcements was not ideal. As a result, despite an enemy force double our own, the men marched out in a brave show of force.

The engagement, to last several hours, started with a brief exchange of missiles between our slingers.

It did not take long for the enemy to gauge our strength as quite lacking in comparison to theirs.

Their immediate response was to send in their horsemen to break through our screen of slingers.

The King and his mounted Celt mercenaries promptly countered, attempting to encircle and destroy the enemy.

The enemy attempted to reply with a heavy volley of javelins from an infantry unit.

Our horse disengaged and the enemy, chasing them, was struck and cut down by their allies' missiles.

Seeing this, the Carthaginians properly drew up their battle lines.

From atop the walls, our far-sighted men could see the layout.

There was a brief general advance of light troops and some hoplites, trying again to pierce though the front screen of slingers.

It succeeded. Our Numidian infantry revealed themselves and used their javelins to great effect, sending the enemy scurrying back under a hail of slinger stones.

Properly forewarned, the enemy sent several units this time.

The infantry held one in place, while the enemy's caetrati discovered to their great loss, that small bucklers were little shield against our missiles.

Many of the enemy had been killed, but these were the lighter or their troops.

As we knew, these light infantry were considered expendable - as many of our own brethren had been in their position before!

Heavily armored celts in impressive chainmail were ordered to the attack.

The slingers shot them as they approached, but could not do too much against their sturdy shields and good armor.

They ran on the approach and flung javelins ...

After receiving the volley, our men "broke."

Sensing victory and loot, the Celts chased after the red-clad backs.

They failed to see the slingers that shot them down from many feet away.

However, they did realize the error of their foolhardiness when many of them were dropped ignobly upon the ground.

Another advance. This time the enemy general himself dared to rush the field.

Our own horse countered his move, leaving the infantry free to engage the enemy infantry that were rapidly advancing at the same time.

As their infantry neared our own, the enemy horse disengaged.

One unit of ours was forced to engage head on, but the other turned and ran away, leading the enemy hoplites into a deadly missile trap.

Seeing the situation, our King turned, and seeing our light foot being outmatched by the enemy phalanx, immediately turned away and into their rear.

Realizing their hopelessness, the enemy broke.

Similarly the ones caught in a crossfire of two slinger units.

Thrown back yet again, the Carthaginians reformed. Their general sent his men forward once more, for only a brief look, before they were set on and driven back.

With that cover, the foot quickly marched back into the city walls before the enemy was able to take advantage.

We had cast a severe wound upon them. With so many of their people lost, especially those who would dig trenches or build siege engines, their siege would be delayed for a while longer.

For every King's man that fell, so did three of the enemy.

Seeing his person on the field of combat greatly encouraged them to great feats of heroism under his command.

The first of our "reinforcements" arrived a few weeks later.

The enemy was forced to meet them in the field, rather than be spread out about the city walls.

As a result, our King's forces also took to the open field.

The enemy's main cavalry troops were simply chariots.

They rushed upon the men who were marching to our aid.

The King's horse, having anticipated this, rode with great urgency and was able to reach the slingers in time to save them from the dreadful chariots.

Bogged down in the mess of men and horses, the Carthaginians were soon fighting for their lives.

The slingers for their part, broke free and began raining missiles on enemy infantry that were rushing to the fight.

This send the chariots away, however - we had inflicted only a few losses on them.

Our infantry, who were marching up to form the battle line, were attacked by the retreating enemy chariots and a second unit that had been waiting in reserve.

Faced with a volley of arrows followed by the crashing of the war engines, one unit broke and dispersed, running straight onto the enemy's swords.

The enemy send troops to pressure our front (now only one infantry unit) but were convinced otherwise by the demeanor of our horse.

As the frontal attack faltered, the flank troops that had been rushing into position were caught of guard by several volleys of shot.

We had killed a good deal of the enemy's remaining infantry. Not much was left of their forces that would be a dangerous threat.

The enemy had left one large unit of chariots.

At first, our men approaching in open order, commenced to duel the archers opposing them, but then seeing how feeble the enemy bows were, and how their arrows fell with no force, the horse rushed forward to engage them in melee.

Seeing this, the infantry also joined into the brawl.

It didn't always work out for them, however. Nevertheless, the enemy was quite harmless once stopped and unable to charge forward or retreat backward.

The last remnants of the enemy slingers were caught up in the battle and destroyed.

The chariots were broken down and apart.

In some places, men literally tore apart the wooden frames that had not been well kept.

In others, the enemy themselves broke apart their carts when horses reared and spilled the chariot occupants out onto the ground.

    A tremendous victory!!

    But not without a price.

In the middle of the combat, or at some point (we do not know) one of the enemy's archers scored a hit on our King.

Passing through the opening front of his helmet, the missile entered his eye, probably killing him instantly.

His first officer, who usually organized the riders who passed orders to the men, had taken over command, and kept the troops ignorant of the fact until the battle was finished.

As the obvious choice, he became leader of the army, and one may might become King in his own right!

The enemy general, having escaped back into Panormus, led a vastly weakened army, but doubtless before anything else could be done, the Carthaginians would "hire or buy" more men for their last hold out on Sicily.

Our new King decreed vengeance upon the Carthaginians. As part of this, General Lacumasen would finish off the work he had unknowingly started - and was tasked to not only execute the Carthaginian Matar Clisipo, but take Panormus and drive them out of Sicily all together.

It was also tentatively suggested that he might have the governorship of Sicily, after its pacification by the two armies of himself and the newly crowned King.
