Thread: Lesson 2

Should have answered everyone now. If I missed someone or something just give me a notice
And something else: When you make the main BG try to get a flow into it. Many of the BG's I see are completely random. Try to go from a light part to a dark part. Like I did in mine:
You see it's lighter on the left behind the render then on the right:

    @Raglan
    Looks good

    @ Hesus:
    Your works look fine

    @ Mr. B
Looks pretty good but try to keep the dimensions of the render the way they orignally were.

Your Page curl looks good too. It doesn't really matter that you didn't use G'mic. But watch the corners a bit more closely. There are some floating pixles round the sides. But I know you're able to that so no real need to fix it

    @ mp0295

Could you post your .xcf file because I can't see what your doing wrong this way?

    @ Xavier Dragnesi

    The Page Curl looks good.

Well you got your 1px border. And when you hold shift in with your selection tool you add a piece to the selection. So you just select the top 3 px and the bottom 3 px. You understand that?

    @ Finlander

The sigs looks great. The placement of your render is very well done. It also has a nice "flow" into it.

The imperfect shadow on the Page Curl doesn't really matter. It's important that you understand the principe. And it seems to be cut off at the bottom?

    @ caramon352

The sig is wonderfull. The render fits in very nicely.
And there's no real need to repost your Page Curl without the BG as it seems you understand how to do it now.

    @ Ascarona

Take a brush and delete the parts of the fragments witch are cut off by the sig size limits. I just took a look at your .xcf file.
When making the gradients you should take to different colors and you should use the method I used. Color>Map>Gradient and make 3 different gradients. If you look to your own gradients they are just bland and single colored witch destroys the contrast. If you don't completely understand what I mean try and compare your own gradients to mine.

    The Page Curl looks good.

    My Lesson 2 XCF file

I had trouble with Step 20. My border selection is 2 pixels all around (although I do now understand how to add to selections with SHIFT). I couldn't get it to look like the one in the lesson, I think this is because my background is a darker stronger colour than yours.

The instructions in Step20/Step 21 don't make sense to me, is there a missing action here?
    1. The border selection created from the background layer would be lost if you press alpha-to-selection again (start of step 21).
    2. Which is the border layer anyway?
    3. Nothing is ever done with the new layer created at the start of Step 20. (Is that the border layer? it doesn't actually contain anything - so I deleted it)

I can't see any effect from the bottom two gradient-fill layers - opacity 10% and 1%... (maybe I just can't see too well).

Anyway, thanks for the lesson - it has taken me to parts of Gimp that were formerly a complete mystery to me.

Please let me know if I've made any mistakes (which I probably have).

Another easy way to make a border, is to make a new layer, select all (Ctrl+A), then fill it with black, using the bucket fill tool. Then, go to Selection->Shrink-> 1 pixel, and then press delete

I think the problem with mine is that there's too much of that explosive render thing left in it. I couldn't get the grunge brushes installed just like I couldn't get the plug in installed, so I just made do with the default brushes. But ah well.

    @ MP
The page curl looks fine man

    @ Xavier
Try and delete the explosion c4d a bit more and you will be done

    @ Odoaker
    It looks fine

    @ Juvenal
The page curl looks good. The sig needs some work tough.
-You should take another part of the c4d in witch you have small fragments. And not these huge lumpy pieces.
-Your render doesn't fit well. The Cut-off piece on the top is visible
-You should make gradients by using the color>map>Gradient method and not by making a new layer and filling it with a color. With this method you will get way more vibrant results.
-The C4d on screen should be under the gradients.

I suggest you take a good look at your own and mine .xcf file and compare them. No worries you've got more than enough time to fix it

Here is my second try. Looks a bit more successful, and I managed both steps of the border (I filled the border selection with foreground colour, then went to the screen layer and pressed delete).

The fragments are scaled down and look quite nice now. The gradient layers are using Colour-Map-Gradient as specified and are above the c4d.

@ Xavier & Juvenal: Both look good there's just on little thing. Try and delete parts of the c4d witch are cut off by the size limit now. Then your all done

    Here it is...

EDIT. I have also set a transparent background in my gradient layers. When I first created them Gradient Map didn't seem to work for a transparent layer, so I did it on white layers. I have now returned to them, added an alpha channel and cut out everything except the central sig area and fragments.

You need to add an alpha channel. To the background layer.
