    Default The Game Crashes When I Defeat a Faction

    I'm playing N/N Americas campaign, and so far, it's excellent. The AI is surprisingly good, and the game is challenging, but I've finally gotten enough troops to take Fort Caroline in Florida from France. It's their last settlement, so they would be destroyed if I took it. The problem is that every time I take the fort, the game freezes completely.

    Anyone know what's wrong?

    What's N/N?

    It's you disable movies in the medieval2.preferences.cfg.

    Normal Battle Difficulty/Campaign Difficulty.

    So disabling that file should fix it?

    EDIT: Tried disabling movies, didn't work. Can't play until I fix this glitch, as either I destroy France now or they steamroll me several turns later.

    Is it the same whether you fight the battle or auto-resolve? Is it a siege?

    There are times like this the game randomly makes a character out of family tree order and when you kill him, as in this case to kill the faction, it will ctd because the character is wrong. This goes back to RTW, believe it or not. I hope this is not your case.

    It's a siege.

    I didn't try an actual battle, but I'm sure auto-resolving isn't the problem. I also tried sieging and capturing on my turn, not theirs, but little was different. I got a loading icon that was working, but nothing ever loaded.

    Also, I don't think the latter of your explanations is my case. I could try waiting for the captain there to leave, then I could attack, but not kill him.

    Sieges have always been a problem with computers not up to it. They take a better than average card to draw you attcking those walls. Siege battles have been known to cause ctds.

    A few questions because I think the answer is in here:
    What are your computer specs as in cpu, memory, graphics card, operating system?
    When was the last time you updated directx 9.0c and Windows Media Player?
    What is your version of .Net framework?

    Can't be graphics issues. I can run games like Crysis, all on High, no problems. I'm using Windows Vista, and I have the latest version of DX and Media Player. I'm also playing the game on Steam.

    Number one that has been proven more than once, graphically the 3d in this game will use more memory and resources than Crysis even knew there was. Can't compare apples and oranges.

    Number two is Vista does not know what directx 9 is and directx 10 is not backward compatible. Check it out in Microsoft's Knowledge Baes. I proves this one before Microsoft would admit it myself when Vista was first released.

    Number three, it could be a Steam issue and not for this tech forum.

    What are your computer specs?

    You won't like this but I think you just found one of CA's bugs that was never documented. I seriously don't believe there is a fix.

    Could it be because there is no entry for France in the "descr_faction_movies.xml" file?
    Those are the victory\defeat movies. And they are not affected by the settings in the cfg file.

    To try, simply open the file (in the imperial_campaign folder of the americas campaign) with Notepad.
    Duplicate (copy\paste) the slave entry and rename it to "france" (see underneath)

    <faction>
    <name>france</name>
    <intro>faction/americas_faction_intro.bik</intro>
    <victory>faction/minor_win.bik</victory>
    <defeat>faction/minor_lose.bik</defeat>
    <death>faction/minor_lose.bik</death>
    </faction>
