    Please read the thread mate.

    General Notes:
    • All students should be aware that when using images other than ones provided by Lolgast or myself MUST be included (or linked provided) in your completed lesson post.
    • Lessons will be one week in duration. We have taken our own time in setting this up and running this course, se we ask the same of you. All assignments will be due no later than 9 days after we post the lessons. Any late submittals will be treated on a individual basis provided you have justifiable circumstances. We are not Ogres but we would also like to avoid having students one or two lessons behind the bulk of the class.
    • We will do our best to post the lessons promptly, but if there is a delay be patient.
    • I am at GMT-8 and lolgast is GMT+1, please keep that in mind when you pm me 4 times in an hour asking for help... If I don't respond to you, chances are I am sleeping or something.
So saying that Lolgast will post the 2nd lesson next monday but you have till tues/wed of next week to submitt lesson 1

    Dear Sübü'ätäi, Dear Lolgast .

How to post the .xcf file, when no attachements are available? Outside the Classroom Hall it is available...Or should I sent it with PM?
Because I like to post it here to get help about my smoke layers, which are to weak and I want to make them stronger...

If you are trying to post the file you need to upload it to a file host like Filefront or megaupload. if you are trying to post images you need to read this thread

    Tank you very much!

Here is my unfinished .xcf file
My two questions to you are:

    • How to make smoke layers stronger?
    • What does "select Alpha to selection do"? If I do so, the Render layer is selected, but no other reaction. Then, I go to "Auswahl" (must be the category "Menu" - third from left) and choose "Verkleinern" = "shrink", setting the value you told us. But I can't see any sense...

Take a look at your toolkit. Under the icons you'll see two colors displayed. The top one is the foreground color and the BG color is the bottom one.

    1) smoke stronger? I dont know what you mean. the smoke should be subtle and dark to match the themes.
    2) Alpha to selection selects to confines of that layer. So for text it makes a selection out of the text outline. handy for when you want to make a new layer to be exactly the same as to alpha selection layer. so in this lesson I am getting you to alpha select the text layer then shrink it by one pixel then invert the selection (so that everything outside of the selection is active) so that when we hit delete all we have is a copy of the rust that says your name. Is that clearer?

    3) if you need me to look at your xcf files please email me the file. (contact me for my email via PM)

Keep on probs with text layers. steps doesn't work

    My steps:

    1. Select the text layer
    2. right click --> alpha to selection
    3. select bucket fill tool and fill the letters with grey
    4. ctrl+shift+A
    5. open as layers -->open rust layer (layer mode --> normal)
    6. scale the rust layer
    7. move the rust layer over the text (at layers menu it is over text layer)
    8. select text layer
    9. right click --> alpha to selection
    10. select shrink to 1 at selection menu
    11. select the rust layer
    12. select --> invert at select menu
    13. delete the rust layer

the text layer is still grey, no effect!
    I do not understand

EDIT: If I DO NOT DELETE the rust layer, but change the mode to overlay and merge down it works But why deleting before changing to overlay and downmerging?

I don't think you're meant to delete the rust layer. Just press the delete button.

I have a question about this part too though. I've gotten up to where Odoaker is at the end of his steps, and have pressed delete, and then changed the layer mode to overlay. Here's where the problem starts. After changing the layer mode, the space occupied by the rust layer becomes lighter than the surrounding background. Then, when I right click the rust layer and "Merge Down" with the text layer, the rust layer area goes black. If I have time, I'll post some screenshots, but any ideas?

Yes Xavier is correct,"press delete" dont delete the layer.
please fully read step 8. you have to paint the text grey.. use the blend tool and select a light and a medium grey.
