Pen tool is a bit of a hard tool to learn, but once you have it, it's really easy. Here a quick and dirty guide :

Click on a spot with your pen tool. Then click somewhere else (where you want to click ofcourse )Now hold left-mouse when you click on the new spot, and move it to bend the line connecting your beginning spot, and the spot you just clicked on. After you've bent it, you'll see 2 lines coming from the spot where you clicked on. One of them defines the bow of the line, the other one defines in which direction your next line will go.Just left-click on the box at the end of one of the lines, and move it to where your next line shall be. And that process over and over. If you've made your selection , just click 'Path to Selection' (or something like that), and then it will take the path you created with pen tool

Hmm.. Would be easier to explain with images

... your right Xavier it be my error.. I forgot a key step in my post #3 instructions.. But it is in the original Step #8.. (Part 1 B) 4th line above the image starting with Duplicate rusty text layer... Once I did that to your text and then applied the blurs it came out fine..

@ Eol D'ling now mate, EDIT: you have made the same error as Xavier mate.

Guys, it it quite a simple effect, once you get the steps down.. really you will smack your head once you get it.. but don't stress over it. let me know if you need help I am avail via MSN or we can arrange a remote session or I can share my desktop and show you that way.

As a remiinder this lesson is still active till Thursday AM.

Ok, I've done all parts up until the text-effects. I can't make sense of it even if my life depended on it I can see that the blur will make a nice glowing effect and all but when I turn the layer mode to overlay everything just turns grey! I have no idea where to go from here because I've tried every possible order I can think of but still no dice! If anyone can clarify the order of the different layers then I would be grateful.

Besides that I'm fairly satisfied with the picture. I made one blunder but when I noticed it I was so far in the process that I decided not to start all over again. Not that hard to spot ^^ Mental note: Learn to fear those damned indicators.

EDIT: Imageshack decided to rescale the picture but it seems fine anyway.

Yes, it's just that I have a little trouble seeing the details in your picture. Not giving up yet though.

Thanks Sübü'ätäi, I was finally able to make sense of the different steps thanks to your video. Not as pretty as I had hoped (I'm pretty sure what's causing it though) but I understand the general process and what influences what etc. My poor computer had to chew for quite some time to add the gaussian effects.

For some reason imageshack insists on rescaling my picture to 800x600 even when I specifically ask it to keep the original scale (1600x1200). Well, I feel like I'm done here if Sübü'ätäi doesn't has some remarks.

EDIT: Regarding the youtube link, just type "gimp twc".

I just had to forget something. No matter, the result got better this time around. A little too bright but I hit the full reverse (and overcompensated somewhat) when my first attempt resulted in shadows instead.

Is my entry satisfactory... it was in Post #99, but I just noticed it had gone, so I've put it back.

(Very odd, the TWC attachment it pointed had also disappeared, shades of the Twilight Zone here.)

    Anyway here it is again
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I removed the despeckle layer from the text because the text looked nicer without it (I was trying to get a blowing-off steam effect), but I can put it back in if you like.

Yes, I added two extra blurred soft-light layers underneath the bio-hazard symbol. They give it a slight 3D look.
