MP CTD
I keep getting kicked to desktop during MP battles. I dont get an error message or anything, even after adding the -show_err switch so I have no idea whats happening. Ive tried uninstalling, reg clean, reinstall etc(three times) but that didnt help. I've tried to reproduce it but it seems completely random. Sometimes I can play for hours before it kicks me off, other times it CTD a few times an hour. Its very frustrating for me, not to mention the other people in the game. I had to stop hosting becouse of it. Any suggestions? I'm clueless...
Oh and I'm on XP Pro.

Re: MP CTD
It's not the game. It's Gamespy. Take it up with them.

Re: MP CTD
Its not gamespy, I'm the only one being kicked out. And I'm not being kicked off-line or anything, I have a good connection. Im just CTD in the middle of a battle with no error messages...

Re: MP CTD
For you to even get into a battle you have to have exactly right down to the last dot the same as the other player(s) or you would never get into a game.
That, my friend by definition rules out the game.
If you say ctd instead of lost connection, then it's your hardware or software on your computer. That could mean you need to clean up your harddrive and defrag it, disable many of the programs you don't need to play online before you hookup, and whatever else can cause ctds because game data isn't moving fast enough including heat.

Re: MP CTD
There are some things I play with that are differant than other people, for instance I use minimal ai, custom maps, turn off flags and green arrows, etc. Most people dont. Ive been playing this since the game came out, I understand what is compatable and what isnt. I just get a crash to desktop, and the weird part is no error messages. But I do get what your saying.
I've already tried all of that other stuff you listed, but to no avail. I havent changed anything lately and it was working fine for month after month. I have plenty of room on my HD, I defrag almost daily, no programs running in the background, heat levels are normal. My ping is 26, so I know thats not it.
All other games(as in TW) play great all day, only rome is doing this so Im hesitant to say its my computer dying.
Anyway, sorry if it looks like I'm giving you an attitude but like I said I'm very frustrated.
Oh well, thanks anyway for your quick responce my friend. Ill +rep when I can, says I need to spread it around first.

Re: MP CTD
Are you able to play RTW for a while without CTDs? That is play a campaign, fight battles. There may be a fundamental problem with your install and/or system (as irishron has pointed out).
In order to be able to find a match on MP your install has to be the same. I am fairly sure that the preferences.txt (which contains the minimal UI selections etc) can be different to the host.
I know that a number of people have used Hamachi in preference to gamespy as that was more stable. The only downside is that only sixteen (16) free accounts can be used on each 'virtual network'. I believe other software can be used instead of Gamespy and Hamachi.
Some players have found the anti-virus / firewall software interfering with thier MP play....

Re: MP CTD
Yep, your correct, some of the preferances can be altered and still be compatable online. As well as custom locations and a few other things that make my game files "differant" than vanilla.
That being said, I dont have any compatability problems or any trouble getting into anyones game. I can host(and often did) and no one has trouble joining. I havent changed any computer settings as far as anti-virus/firewall software or added any hardware in over a year.
Like I said in the OP... "Sometimes I can play for hours before it kicks me off, other times it CTD a few times an hour." I can play M2TW or Empires for hours on end with no CTD but I guess it has to be a hardware problem since I did a clean install three times and still have the same CTD with no error message.
Hmm, I should see if it does the same thing on Barbarin Invasion...probably so.
Thanks again for your responces.

Re: MP CTD
It may be a Windows Service that is running periodically that is causing the problem.
You can either shut most of them off manually using msconfig or you can use IOBIT's Game Booster free software to put your PC into 'gaming mode'. This closes down a lot of services that are not shown on the msconfig screen (as far as I can tell).
This is the web page: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Re: MP CTD
Cool, Ive already got the game booster, I'll give that a try. Hell, I'll try anything at this point. I just dont know why it can run fine for so long and then start CTD every 30 min or so...with no error message. I'd even be fine with that if it were single player, but its online and I'm sure I have to be getting on peoples nerves.
Thanks again.

Re: MP CTD
Yes, I stopped playing ETW in MP as the system I was using was very unstable. I certainly hate other players from dropping from a game so the least I could do was be considerate.
I know recently someone found that the anti-virus that they were using would cause the game to minimize (not CTD) which is more of an annoyance than anything else.
Sometimes with Windows updates the result can be similar.
