It was the concept artist who painted a picture of Minas Tirith that was used in the film and he said he got his inspiration from Mont Saint Michel. But ofcourse it wasn't just that! He had his life experience and the BOOK to get inspi from!... ()

I did read somewhere that Tolkien himself were at Mt. Saint Michel and did get some inspiration from there when writing about Minas Tirth. Would make a lot of sense, Mt Saint Michel + Byzantine Constantinople = Almost identical description of Minas Tirith. Needless to say it would be cool to visit the place sometime, not for looking like Minas, but rather because it seems to be a really cool place, with a really long history.

P.S Yep, it does look like a church because there's an abbey on the top of the castle. There has been christians there since approx. the 9th century.

I have already went to Mont Saint Michel. This is a beautiful fortified monastery with a magnificent goldenj statue at the top.

The inside is like tipical middle age castle with a lot of stone arches, and the view is wonderful.

this is a good place to visit

by the way, Mt St Michel is about 4 time smaller than Minas Tirith
