    Default Lief's screens

I've taken the following screenshots using the Fall of Rome mod, which you can find here. This will be part one of a battle I fought using the demo. There are 14 screenshots, and I've done some photoshopping to make them look better (what else would you use photoshop for ). And now,

    Gothic Invasion: Part I
    Germania Superior, 356 AD, Dawn

General Valerius Constantius surveyed the battlefield. He had awoken to the screams of savage Gothic warriors. And then marching. The sound of thousands of feet walking through the forest toward him. He hated Germans. Goths, Franks, Saxons, Frisians, Vandals, Angles, he hated them all. Who would want to assault the greatness that was Rome? It was perfect. Perfect in every way. No time for that now though. He threw on his armor and arranged his small garrison force. He had three units of legionarii, the elite infantry, and four times as many auxiliarii, the light infantry, and a couple hundred sagittarii, archers. Plus, his favorite, some Roman cavalry. His men got into formation, just as the scouts returned. Two Gothic armies were marching towards Valerius, one led by Adelwulf, a hairy, drunken chieftain, the other by his nephew Rodwulf, not quite as hairy, but just as drunken. And then, he saw Rodwulf's men marching over the horizon.

Valerius wondered what to do. He had been a general for nearly twenty years now, but he hadn't seen a battle like this in years. He had fought the Sassanids, in the first war against those barbaric Persians. He had been a hero of that war. Still, that had been six years ago. And a horde of Goths was a far cry from a horde of cataphracts.

On the other side of the battlefield, Rodwulf and his men closed in on the Roman line. Adelwulf had warned him about marching up ahead (the plan had been to crush the Romans from their left and right flank at the same time), but Rodwulf saw his chance for glory. His forces charged forward, up the hill, toward the Roman line.

Seeing that the Gothic horde was now in range of his archers, Valerius gave the command. The sagittarii aimed...

    ...and let their arrows loose.

At the same time, Valerius' legionarii threw their javelins. Valerius was counting on the combined arrows and javelins raining down on the Goths to rout them. After all, they were smelly brutes, right?

Valerius was wrong. The Goths kept coming, even if there a couple less of them. Rodwulf began to charge.

Rodwulf, though young, wasn't an idiot. Charging the Roman center without his uncle would certainly lead to death. He'd send his cavalry at the Roman flank, hopefully causing enough chaos to break the Roman lines.

Valerius had had much experience being flanked by cavalry in his battles against the Persians. Noticing the Goth cavalry on his right flank, he ordered most of his cavalry to charge the unprepared Goth horsemen.

The Romans crashed into the Gothic line, which was still preparing itself to charge the Romans. Caught unprepared, the Goths were initially cut down.

The Goths fought ferociously, taking down as many Roman cavalrymen as they could...

...but after taking heavy losses, Rodwulf's cavalry broke and rank, and Rodwulf's only chance of crushing the Roman flank was lost.

Valerius, seeing the Gothic cavalry flee, felt a heavy weight lift off his shoulders. His flanks were secure, and now his infantry would have to hold. The Gothic warbands were beginning their charge.

Valerius' men would have to hold their positions. They locked their shields and presented an unbreakable wall; on one side stood the snarling barbarian hordes while on the other stood Roman civilization.

Hope you guys like it. Part II coming soon. :sweatingb
