Perhaps it is actually you that is thinking too simply. A cancer could be seen as a drought, drying up the river before it reaches its delta.

It's an interesting thought. Have you read "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse, by chance? If not, you'd love it, for your analogy's sake alone.

You start off from scratch, nothing and move slowly downhill. You are forced to turn according to where your parents think is best for you, as a result from their nature. Then you face numerous rocks and waterfalls, which represent problems growing up. Finally, you have alot of roads in front of you(the river delta
Or your parents are killed the very second you are born, then you are dumped onto an island where it is constant dog eat dog, a tiger comes at you, but a pack of sympathetic wolves take you away. They care for you for a short time, when you learn to walk on your own, you wander off from them one random day. By both luck and fortunate intelligence you survive your babihood on this island with constant struggles.

Life is more like an ocean in a storm with random waves in short, absent and huge bursts to me.

Life is like a river: full of slimey creatures, frequently merging with other rivers and quickly goes stagnant if not moving forward.

Maybe I could say it starts from something like a pond, which is a gigantic hub of rivers, different for each individual, with different obstacles at different stages for each person but ultimately leads to one area of the hub (which resembles nothing).

That's abadoning the river metaphor slightly.

It's a metaphor you can extend to quite literally any object.

Life is like a lava lamp.

You start as cool glob of gloop and become more and more active as you warm up (life).

Some globs rise to the top (succeed), others sink to the bottom. (fail)

Some switch back and forth (middle class) and a small minority stay top or bottom. (aristocracy/poor)

Life is like a bag of doritos.

You start out as a fresh bag and then start to be consumed (age)

As you are consumed you lose more and more of yourself until finally you're empty and die.

    etc etc.
