Default Tips for my trip to Germany

    Hello TWC,

i am excited to announce that in some point in 2010 i will be venturing to germany, with me i will be bringing my bank account which i hope will contain about $15,000 or so, so about 10,000 euros... i will be staying with friends that i have in the country so my expenses for hotels and such should be limited...

i hope to stay until my money runs out, but are there any tips you seasoned travellers could give?

i can scrape by with the german i know, and part of the reason i am going is to leave being able to speak fairly fluent german when i leave

i plan on going around july or so, and staying until Oktoberfest and maybe longer... all depending on if i get bored or my money funds are running tight

Thanks for the tips and all that jazz

Well, 10.000 Euros should get you around for quite some time. I would suggest to visit Berlin and Hamburg for a week or so, but be careful in Hamburg with spending your money.

Also check out other country's while you are at it.

I actually happen to be going to Germany (among various other countries) with my father in 2010 too, though in the dead of winter... Hopefully there will be good advice in this thread.

"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

Winter time is a great German season if you like nostalgia and cosiness, especially around Christmas.

You will find many Christmas markets with allot of good food and sweets, which traditionally can only be found around that period to make the cold winter time more bearable.

I always look forward to the winter time after the lame fall.

Well, that's encouraging. I would have preferred to go during summer, but I will have started university and the breaks aren't quite long enough.

If you're travelling in the Winter, I advice the Mosel, with picturesque villages (e.g. Cochem) and beautifull landscapes. There are a lot of castles and some forts, like fort Mont Royal.
Or Bayern, especially the southern part of it, the "Romantische Straße", with the breathtaking views and the famous fairytale -like buildings, and ofcourse castle Neuschwanstein

Yeah, nothing like that kind of sight-seeing on a cold day and ending up in a some rustical restaurant eating a well deserved Schweinebraten and enjoying a beer.

Visit Berlin and new Reichstag, you will see graffiti that was done by Russian soldiers in 1945 right after the battle of Berlin. Nightlife in Berlin is good too.

Visit Bavaria (It's huge, so not all of it), for the history and landscape.

Both male and female walruses have tusks and have been observed using these overgrown teeth to help pull themselves out of the water.

The mustached and long-tusked walrus is most often found near the Arctic Circle, lying on the ice with hundreds of companions. These marine mammals are extremely sociable, prone to loudly bellowing and snorting at one another, but are aggressive during mating season. With wrinkled brown and pink hides, walruses are distinguished by their long white tusks, grizzly whiskers, flat flipper, and bodies full of blubber.
Walruses use their iconic long tusks for a variety of reasons, each of which makes their lives in the Arctic a bit easier. They use them to haul their enormous bodies out of frigid waters, thus their "tooth-walking" label, and to break breathing holes into ice from below. Their tusks, which are found on both males and females, can extend to about three feet (one meter), and are, in fact, large canine teeth, which grow throughout their lives. Male walruses, or bulls, also employ their tusks aggressively to maintain territory and, during mating season, to protect their harems of females, or cows.
The walrus' other characteristic features are equally useful. As their favorite meals, particularly shellfish, are found near the dark ocean floor, walruses use their extremely sensitive whiskers, called mustacial vibrissae, as detection devices. Their blubbery bodies allow them to live comfortably in the Arctic region—walruses are capable of slowing their heartbeats in order to withstand the polar temperatures of the surrounding waters.
The two subspecies of walrus are divided geographically. Atlantic walruses inhabit coastal areas from northeastern Canada to Greenland, while Pacific walruses inhabit the northern seas off Russia and Alaska, migrating seasonally from their southern range in the Bering Sea—where they are found on the pack ice in winter—to the Chukchi Sea. Female Pacific walruses give birth to calves during the spring migration north.
Only Native Americans are currently allowed to hunt walruses, as the species' survival was threatened by past overhunting. Their tusks, oil, skin, and meat were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that the walrus was hunted to extinction in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Compared to other western metropoles everything including hotels are cheap, there are even allot of these alternative folks offering a room for free to any given stranger.

Not my cup of coffee, but if you don't mind....

EDIT: Oh yeah it's called couchsurfing, quite an international thingy, but Berlin seems to have a big crowd offering this.

Agreed, I stayed in Berlin for 4 days back in 2007 and it was awesome. Accommodation and food was reasonable and nightlife and "something to do" was plentiful.

False, we already have all the bikes we can ever need(really), and the smell of sausage in the air is from hanging around in the Cologne gay-clubs to long Phalanx.
