    Default New computer problems.

    I just bought the parts to build my own computer.

    Coolmaster case.
    GF8200a mobo.
    PhenomII 940.
    4 gig ddr2 1066hz ram.
    9800gt video card.

    I unplug my monitor from this computer, monitor goes to test screen. I plug it into the new mobo's video port and get a black screen with it turning the screen power off. I plug it into the new Nvidia card, same black screen. I pluf it back into this computer and I am typing this to you.

    It's been years since I built a system I don't remember this one without even a POST. I know the power supply works because all the fans work.

    If there is a reference someplace I missed please give me a link.

    Thank you.

    Make sure non of the pins on your video cable are bent first. Had that happen to me back in the day and it was a simple fix to a similar problem.

    The second thing you can check is which card is active. Is your on board video card enabled or disabled? Have all the drivers, etc. been installed for your Nvidia card?

    Out of curiosity, did your monitor ever work with this computer with just the on board video prior to installing the video card?

    Sometimes, it can be easier to go back and find out what does work with just the minimal components in the system. Hope that gives you a few ideas to work from. Sorry to hear about your problem and I hope you get it worked out. Just let me know if you need any more help once you get some answers.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I put in the new card and plugged in the monitor, black screen.
    I take it out and plug in the mobo's port, black screen.
    I plug it back into this old computer, beautiful, again.

    I can't get a screen to see what BIOS screen looks like.

    One more question. Does the 9800GT card have a PCIE power connection? I can't it if it does.

    Yes the 9800GT requires it's own power source (1x 6pin adaptor), if it's not hooked up to the additional power it might cause the card to turn itself off to avoid damage.

    That said, if the Nvidia card is not installed and you're still having a problem your on board video is the issue. Did you get the mobo from Newegg or someplace where you can return it and try with a new board?

    Does your motherboard bleep at all when you turn it on?

    @sparty,
    I got it from Newegg. I"m going to have to do some reading. It may have something to do with the voltage of these new 1066 ram I got for it. I was too tired to deal with it last night.

    @Freddie,
    I don't remember seeing that adaptor port on thecard last night. Maybe I was too tired. Nvidia's instructions leave a lot to be desired. The only thing I see are the edge connector on top of the card for SLI mode. ATI put theirs on the back edge in plain sight.

    No POST bleeps. I didn't have my speakers plugged in but I still think I should have heard something from the motherboard one.

    Thanks for the help

    No display doesn't always mean a GPU issue. Try, for example, ensuring your RAM is in properly, all cables are in properly or in general just rebuilding the whole system carefully just incase something is loose.

    Very good advice. Thank you. I'll do it.

    It happens to me a lot. 75% of the time when I build a system or add something, I get absolutely no display at all. I usually reseat things carefully and I eventually get it running again.

    This one turned out to be my fault. Things look different with some sleep. When I took out the video card I had to disconnect the +12volt cable. Then I forgot to plug it back in. This morning that empty connection was staring at me.

    The 9800GT is next. I have one with no 4-pin or 6 -pin molex connctor. On line they have pictures of three versions of this card and only one shows a molex connector. See what happens.

    Thank you, again, to all.

    It will. If the motherboard, cpu, ram work, the rest is just time consuming. Now, I have to get back to real world and family. I'll finish it my next weekend.
