    I check into small hotel a few kilometers from Kiev. It is late. I am tired. I tell woman at desk I want a room. She tells me room number and give key. "But one more thing comrade; there is one room without number and always lock. Don't even peek in there." I take key and go to room to sleep. Night comes and I hear trickling of water. It comes from the room across. I cannot sleep so I open door. It is coming from room with no number. I pound on door. No response. I look in keyhole. I see nothing except red. Water still trickling. I go down to front desk to complain. "By the way who is in that room?" She look at me and begin to tell story. There was woman in there. Murdered by her husband. Skin all white, except her eyes, which were red. I tell her I don't give a . Stop the water trickling or give me refund. She gave me 100 ruble credit and free breakfast. Such is life in Moscow

    You need to control a port to research destroyers, or any naval unit for that matter. Landlocked countries are able to research naval units, etc, once they become....not landlocked, assuming that new property comes with at least a level 1 port. Doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me....

    The only thing I kinda don't like, but not enough to really do anything about, is the fact that the ability to build a port in the first place is tied to the initial DD research. That's something that's easily changed though. As a matter of fact, see edit 2 for how to change this. I'm bored and can't sleep. Might as well.

    If you want to just own the province for the 15 seconds before the Italians retake it, go to:

    <HoI3 Folder>/history/provinces/Italy

    and open the file called 9767 - Ed.txt.

    It'll look like this:

    Code:
    owner = ITA
    controller = ITA
    add_core = ITA
    anti_air = 1
    infra = 4
    air_base = 4
    naval_base = 2
    1941.4.1 = {
    	controller = ENG

    } # Battle of Keren
    1943.9.3 = {
    	owner = ENG

    }
    Change it to this (and make a backup first if you're so inclined):

    Code:
    owner = ETH
    controller = ETH
    add_core = ITA
    anti_air = 1
    infra = 4
    air_base = 4
    naval_base = 2
    1941.4.1 = {
    	controller = ENG

    } # Battle of Keren
    1943.9.3 = {
    	owner = ENG

    }
    And that'll do it. Now that I think of it, since you start out at war with Italy, and they probably have troops in that province to begin with, you might just instantly lose it. 15 seconds not required.

    Edit: Yeah, just tested it, and they have a stack of units sitting in that province to begin with (it is their main supply base, after all), so you insta-lose it. But hey...it's got brown stripes now..

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Edit2: And to change the tech so you can build ports without having to know how to build destroyers (so you can take some beach province, build a port, research DDs, be happy), go to:

    <HoI3 Folder>/technologies

    and open Naval technologies.txt

    In there, right towards the top, you'll see:

    activate_building = naval_base

    It's in the first entry (destroyers). Cut (as in cut and paste) just that part so it's no longer in the file there, making the destroyers entry look like this:

    Code:
    destroyer_technology = {

    	activate_unit = destroyer

    	allow = {
    		num_of_ports  =1
    	}

    	research_bonus_from = {
    		naval_engineering = 1.0
    	}

    	on_completion =naval_engineering

    	difficulty = 1
    	start_year = 1918
    	folder = smallship_folder
    }

    Now, open up the file called Naval Doctrines.txt in the same folder. In there, scroll down until you see the entry for Sea Lane Defense. It looks like this:

    Code:
    sea_lane_defence = {

    	allow_escorts = yes

    	research_bonus_from = {
    		naval_doctrine_practical = 0.7
    		fleet_in_being_doctrine = 0.3
    	}

    	change = no
    	on_completion = fleet_in_being_doctrine

    	difficulty = 5
    	start_year = 1936
    	folder = naval_doctrine_folder
    }
    It's immediately after the ######FLEET IN BEING###### , so it's easy to spot.

    Anyhow, change it to this:

    Code:
    sea_lane_defence = {

            activate_building = naval_base
    	allow_escorts = yes

    	research_bonus_from = {
    		naval_doctrine_practical = 0.7
    		fleet_in_being_doctrine = 0.3
    	}

    	change = no
    	on_completion = fleet_in_being_doctrine

    	difficulty = 5
    	start_year = 1936
    	folder = naval_doctrine_folder
    }
    Save both files, start the game, boosh naval bases are buildable after you research sea lane defense (which you can do even as a landlocked country). For gods sake, make backups before you do this, since I haven't really tested it, and even though it seems to be okay, there might be some weird side effect somewhere. Like, for example, one might pop up because there's still an entry regarding ports in the destroyer tech. Test away though if you like.
