For the Band of Brothers one i used pentool and copied the layer and used an gaussian blur to "smooth" things out.
The spidey one is just brushes

You used too much blur on the bottom one, it looks a bit glowing
And well the top one is nicer to look at

using a white layer on the bottom to see how it looks on a background, just delete it when you're finished

Yes I know, when you've finished it just put it to a white background just to look how it "really" looks you've got the same in gimp
