Before we attack foreign lands we should deal with our internal problems, that is, the rebellions. If more information could be brought regarding their numbers, we could create a force to get rid of them soon.

Hmm yes senators we need to deal with the internal problems first before laying our eyes on foreign cities. But even after we settled our internal problems we should first try the diplomats way and see if we can arrange a peace with our enemy.

Quintus Equestris Cicero arrives for his first day in the senate. What would be in store for him?
Then we should spread our legions around the troublesome areas,
At the same time emissaries can be sent to the Koiron Hellanon to ask for peace.
If this is refused we can still continue to try even as we advance an opposing force.
Marcus once more walked into the curia, a hall with empty chatter it seemed.

Consul Falco walks in and sits down
Im sorry, but I had a slave revolt at my holdings(OOC: I just started school and couldn't post)
Now, I can I be fully updated to what has been going on in my absence
And also, I hear were moving legions around and preparing for war, well lets get a report in.
And also, I want to start up a war collage to educate young roman men of the proper bearing in the art of command
In addition to this, I want a permeant military consul of Ex-legatus's and such to advice the senate on military matters
I think a good academy on the art of war should be good for young equestrans and nobles. I don't think we need anyone permenant to teach there, besides we need those people on the battlefield now. I personally wish to oversee some good literature from greece to come in. Its honestly the new "thing" I hear.
Also we do not need more military men coming in and bugging us about how we should prepare for war, I beleive that it would be more self-serving to you dear senator.
"Greek? Not while I'm censor, we won't. I will not have good, disciplined Roman minds spoiled by Greek boyloving reveries. Roman boys should get a Roman education. They can only get weak from those Greek 'philosophers'. We need Romans to educate Romans, we have Roman heroes and Roman stories to tell. We don't need those phony Greeks!"
Are you serious Censor? Roman legends are based on those of Greeks, our Gods are copies of theirs? If anything we take whats good from other lands and bring them in. Of course maybe your lack of education makes you blind. We need the best minds from all cultures to come in and teach our young men, else we have them crushed in battle like Varros who wasn't educated by all cultures.
Consul Falco, the old Veteran and Legatus, is discusted at the mens notion of what miltary men need to be taught
My good senators, this will not be a collage to educate the young men on the finer arts, this will be a collage on WAR
The men should not read Plato and talk about their feelings and things about other cultures, like how greeks love boys or how germans practice human sacrifice , they will be there to learn how to fight and command. I want the instructors to be military men like ex-soilders and I also want men from the auxiliaries teaching there that are skilled at their position. Like Samaritan and Alan Cavalrymen, and Eastern archers and the like
They musnt learn about the gods or philosophy, but learn things on how to ride and to use a sword and handle a cohort of Legionaries or a trumae of Calvary
That I will not move on
And also when my term as consul expires I wish to be made a Legatus Legionis of the VIIth Legion in the east.
Yeah and I wish to be the commander of the 10th Legion in Africa. When you stop barking orders give me a message.
Oh wait. If we are educating them, why don't we educate them in everything they need? Honestly if we want good leaders, they need to learn all they can!
Well, they should learn the other stuff at another school, note the name, collage of war and not rhetoric and literature
Though back to the matter at hand, I do agree with the motion to take crete and cyrpus
Also, is Rhodes in hostile hands, as that is a great base to have in the eastern mediterrian incase rome wishes to have operations in Asia minor or the Aegean into
Also, I feel that having Rhodes under our control will greatly boost our sea trade and will do much to alleviate the financial woes we have
While I am not totally averse to a Military Academy in Rome, it should not supersede the process we already have in place. Young Romans been appointed as a Military Tribune and serving in the legions, under an experienced general, and learning from them has always been the way leadership and command was taught. It was how I was taught, it was how the countless great generals that Rome has produced have been taught, and it's benefits are obvious. The only real school for military things is out in the field, being part of a legion, seeing how a general does it. No matter how much instruction a cadet receives, it will never come close to emulating the success of learning about the army in the army. Though I can see some benefits coming from a military academy, the Consul will have to give me several assurances before I fully support it.
Why must we appoint a legion to you Cicero? You give us no reason, we do not even know your background, nothing it seems apart from your name. I oppose any legislation giving this man a legion.

Festinius laughed
I believe Cicero spoke in jest Senator Macerinus. No need to flare up at a well placed joke.
But you are right, out in the field is where the real training takes place. We cannot instill the fear in our troops that they feel when facing a charging battle line, that is where our soldiers shine.
The military are no more or less inportant than the economic situation and I will only support the attack on the Koiron Hellanon once we are stabilised. Move the legions to put down unrest, send diplomats to the Koiron Hellanon and keep them occupied, then if need be we can destroy them.
It will improve our relationship with Egypt but could aggrivate them as it could be seen that we are expanding into their sphere of influence. We could sack the city taking money to improve our financial situation, we can then offer the city to Egypt as a gift or use it in negotiations for tibutes or a certain amount of money.
Relationships would improve and we would not need to feed any more citizens.
@ ace_general, the war is with the western half of crete, the other half and cyprus are in the hands of the Eygptians who are our allies. We also already own rhodes - you should have a look at the game, as consul you might be needed to use it. the Legatus Legionis position doesn't exist in YATS, the closest thing is to become the governor of the east, which involves you playing building the settlements etc, and gives you command over the garrisions and legions in the area, but you are NOT allowed to fight an offensive war - thats for the consuls.
ic; I am going to have to oppose my fellow consul, i think that a military acadamy is a bad idea.
I have served in serveral wars, and i am as experienced as any man here. The serving system we have is proven and effective, what use is it to take our learning Romans away from camp to learn the 'theory' when they can do that in camp and learn the realities as well.
The theory may teach us that spears work well agaist cavalry, but a general must understand more than that, he must know the men that holds the spears. A legion respects someone that has live in camp and faced the same conditions as them far more than they will someone who has learned how to move the pieces but doesn't understand that the pieces are ROMANS

I am sorry Cicero, but considering recent events I amn't taking any demand too lightly.
I believe that if we should not go after the Greeks on Crete. Sharing a border with Egypt would only strain tensions with our biggest exporter of grain. That is something that we cannot let happen, for the good of the people of Rome.
I support an expansion of the legions, to better deal with any threat that they may be forced to meet, either internal or external. We cannot allow our military to become weak. Saying that, money is what gives us the ability to strengthen our forces. We must ensure that we have a steady flow of income to match our outgoings, so that we can strengthen our military. The only way we can ensure this is if we expand the infastructure and economic capabilities of Italy and our provinces. If elected Quaestor I will draft up a plan that would allow both our military and economy to flourish.

My good man, you do our legends and our gods injustice. While there may be parallels in our religions, we are sufficiently different to speak of a Roman religion, and not a Greek one. Our true Roman legends have no connection whatsoever with the Greeks. Or would you argue that the Horatii were Greek? That Scaevola lived in Athens? Or that Romulus loved boys when he wasn't busy founding our city?
As for your remark about my education, it is so ridiculous that I shan't dignify it with an answer.
And as for your education, well. Let's just say that all Romans know that Varro (because that was his name) lost at Cannae because of his rashness, not because of a perceived 'lack of education'.

Senators, i have good news. The vote for the Quaestor Suffixus has ended. And the winner in the race is Lucius Geganius Macerinus.
Quaestor Geganius, congratulations. Now i hate to be rude, but Rome needs the report, and i must press you to compile it
Richard Archer - King of England
The new Quaestor stood up.
Thank you Consul, you have my gratitude for your support. Now, if the Senate can excuse me, I will leave now for the treasury and work on the report.
The Quaestor quickly walked down the few steps to the Curia floor, to some congratulatory pats on the back from the Senators he passed, and briskly left the Curia.
