    Default Temples of Baalbek, Lebanon

Here are a few Roman temples in the city of Baalbek, Lebanon. Apparently, these temples were built on top of older pagan temples of Baal. Baalbek is nowadays a popular site for tourists.

    Temple of Jupiter

    Temple of Bacchus

    Temple of Venus

I have been there. Yes, there are many ruins, but these 3 are the major ones. As you see, a lot of the temple pieces (a lot of which have superb carvings on them) are still left on the ground after suffering from earthquakes. Some people say that the ruins of Baalbek are ''better'' than the Acropolis!

I even saw some sort of mummified body which was on display in one of the buildings.

I was 12 years old when I saw Baalbek. When I saw these temples, I started to get into Ancient History.

Stunning shots, absolutely beautiful. Imagine them in their prime, surrounded by citizenry and the hum of ancient life. Glistening columns reflecting the afternoon sun's rays. Thanks for the pics, GD.

Before Rafiq Hariri's assassination, Lebanon was the safest country in the Middle East. It's safe today too.

Or... maybe not. Another minister was attacked yesterday in Naqash, Beirut.

hmmm.. I can remember seeing hizbollah's outposts/AA guns on every hill in the bekaa ... But overall I didn't feel threatened by them, or by the numerous syrian troops with their T52s that could be seen now or then (that was like 6-7 years ago ...)
