Here is the big deal with the way african americans are depicted in tintin au congo.

they are depicted in a subhuman state, like monkeys, as has been said many times. This seems to imply that they are not as human as the white people who actually look normal. It has nothing to do with stereo-types like "americans are greedy".

well, start by READING THE THING
ever did it ? Every comic is based on stereotypes ? or is every colombian plotting against an eveil dicatorial régime ? The do look like people, but their stereotypes are over the top, just like the chinese, and the native american etc.

Just one person or one mod claimed Tintin was racist, thats why Herge was one of the biggest Civil rights movement supporters. It just so happened that when his books where published that thats what people thought they looked like.

no one has claimed tintin was racist; just one particular imagery is not appropriate as a sig for everyone to see unless in special context. That's all.

IMO, the image in question is fairly derogatory of black people. However, i'm certain TinTin was not a racist and the comics where not meant to be racist, nor is any member who posted the pictures being deemed racist.

No matter the innocent natured intent of the comic, it still shows an image which is not acceptable by todays standards...Therefore, it should not be used in public display for a sig or an avatar.

Although I can see no problem with the image being posted in a discussion about TinTin, as long as it's in spoilers and the nature of the material is specified.

that's actually the view of mods and members who are against this particular image, but somehow we all get demonized as accusing tintin as racist, accusing belgium as racist and all being political correctness nazis. This is just sad.

I've already explained the reason why this thread should have stayed where it was, I don't think Justinian did this on the purpose you are talking about, he probably put it here for the reason the member posted that, if you look at the first post the OP explains why he is leaving TWC and his reason is all because of an infraction about the "Tin Tin' picture, which could also belong here

Yes everything is done to oppress everyone. A moderator does something, someone yells oppression. You guys slay me with the extremism. Of course Rebel had good reasoning to leave it where it was originally posted and I would agree with it being there. This site makes me smile.
