Thread: Songs in praise of democracy?

Default Songs in praise of democracy?

I was wondering if anybody knew of any songs or any type of music in praise of democracy. There are plenty in support of socialism and speaking against social injustice but I can't find a single one hailing the fairest form of government - which perplexes me when you consider how many wars have been fought over it (wars tending to breed good propaganda tunes).

Socialism is democracy... the most radical form of democracy, actually.

Socialism isn't democracy. They are in totally different areas of the spectrum. You can have democratic socialism and autocratic socialism.

Socialism is an economic term less than a political one. It's a highly relative term. Thus a lot of the "socialist" bands out there really are more democratic than anything, even if they also happen to favour redistribution of wealth. To them socialism is a precondition to democracy. To horrifically condense the issue I guess it depends what you define democracy as. I'm sure there's plenty of pro-government ("democracy") bands out there. I just generally avoid them.

I'd label anything by the likes of System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Anti-Flag, or whatever pro-democracy. Others would label them "socialist", and thus completely at odds with "democracy".

It's a bit of an ideological cluster-, and I guess one of the arguments against politically motivated music

Correct, I was thinking of democratic socialism. What I meant to say is that socialism is not opposed to democracy.

socialism is based for and by the people

autocratic socialism is not socialism in my eyes.

Oh who could forget this country classic?

God damn I hate patriotic country music

EDIT: I know it's more of an American thing but it has stuff like "where at least I know I'm free"...that's pretty close to democracy

The American narrative cliche of freedom can better be described as liberal democracy, with the emphasis on liberal. There are lots of songs about the right to do whatever one wishes, but there aren't many about government by the will of the majority. This might qualify, although it's more of a polemic against a ruling minority.
