No contest, John Carpenter's version.
It's still a great movie today with special effects that still looks good.
the black and white one scared me the most
Without doubt the best is John Carpenter's film.
Both films were based on a 1938 novella called Who Goes There (read it here) by John W. Campbell, driving force behind the SF magazine boom in the '40s and '50s as editor of Astounding Stories (later renamed Analog)
Even though I was familiar with Campbell's original story, I found Carpenter's adaptation excellent, expanding on Campbell's ideas and adding some much needed ambiguity to the characters and plot.
Unlike the Thing from Another World, Carpenter's treatment hasn't dated and remains impressive even after 27 years.
I've never seen the 1951 version but the 80's one scared the out of me.

John Carpenter talks The Thing 2
John Carpenter told Empire Magazine that he is keen to do a sequel to "The Thing". I have no doubt our Austrian Wonder writer is truly excited to hear this. He and I are huge fans of this great sci-fi flick. Here is what Carpenter told Empire:
I have a great story for Part 2, which kicks off with the two characters left alive at the end of the first one. I’m interested in doing it. Unfortunately, I don’t think Universal is. Well, it’s interested in doing a sequel, but it’s not interested in having me direct it! You know, the studio will end up getting some commercials hotshot to do it, and that’ll be that. I don’t care. I’m certainly not going to beg. These people didn’t even get the original, despite the fact it’s my favourite movie of my own.You tell em John. You are most right, big studios will grab the flavor of the week and a cast from the WB to destroy your great film with a sequel... or they will do it right, bring back Carpenter and let him remaster his original with a kick ass sequel! I would love to see a sequel. Thanks to Foxfrost for the heads up!

is that plausible?
Well there has been talk of them re-making the first movie for a while now.
hope there will be a sequel
Why do a sequel when you can remake with big names and make it a popcorn blockbuster?
Remake of remake will be a deja-vu, except if you change the plot and the endings
Carpenter's version is awesome. Not a lot of 80's films can stand up that nice to the test of time.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favourite sci-fi films and I found it superior to the original in terms of atmosphere and tension. No sequel though, please.

No they need to stay the hell away from a sequel or remake.
The thing doesn't need a sequel, in fact a sequel could destroy the awesome ending for the first movie.
The video game nearly did but thankfully we can ignore it since it was so stupid and the creatures weren't "the thing".
So really no, leave it as it is.
Carpenter doesn't have the clout in Hollywood anymore to get a budget big enough to do a good job, and by 'good job' I mean more than bad CGI.

Carpenters version, not too many 80s sci-fi movies that you can say are still awesome to this day. This is one of them.

Except The Thing didn't have CGI and still today looks more believable then some of the CGI in Hollywood movies.
What Rob Bottin did in The Thing is really quite incredible and can't be replaced by CGI.
It's like the Queen in Aliens and the Queen in AVP.
The Queen looks alot better in Aliens then the CGI version.

Sequel? I've only heard they were making a prequel, concerning the Norwegian camp.

I agree with others said, The Thing is better, 20 something years old and still a great movie.
