Default New strat ship models - possible?

Once you read through, you will realize that I am a complete noob with 3D. Anybody care to help?

    The story so far:
I have been able to convert the vanilla model "navy_cog.cas" into MS3D by using the old stratmoel converter (GOAT didn't work with the model).
It is possible to alter the model and convert it back for use on the strat map (see pic, navy_cog_mini)

My first try was to replicate the method of getting battle models converted to strat models:

    1. Delete the group "navy_barb" from the model, save as "strat_ship_skel.MS3D"
    2. Export "longship.MS3D" in autodesk 3DS as "Longship_export.3DS"
    3. Import "Longship_export.3DS" into "strat_ship_skel.MS3D"
    4. Change group name to "navy_barb" and assign it to "Figure" in "materials", delete "material01" in "materials"
    5. Saved as "longship_import.MS3D", converted and loaded: crash - "Model database failed to load model models_strat/navy_cog.cas"
    6. Copied comment from "Groups, navy_barb" from "navy_cog.MS3D", repeated step 5, same result
    7. Assigned all vertices to joint "bone_root_navy: repeated step 5, same result

The second try was a slight change from the first as I used "navy_cog_mini.MS3D" instead of the "strat_ship_skel.MS3D" model

    1. Import "Longship_Export.3DS" into "navy_cog_mini.MS3D"
    2. Rename Group "Regroup01" to "navy_new", assigned to materials "Figure", deleted material "Material01"
    3. Copied comment from group "navy_barb" into comment of "navy_new"
    4. Saved as "longship_combined.MS3D", converted and loaded: crash - "Model database failed to load model models_strat/navy_cog.cas"
    5. Selected both groups and "regroup(ed)", corrected comment by copying from navy_cog, repeated step 4, same result
    6. Assigned all vertices to joint "bone_root_navy: repeated step 4, same result

The last try was using the "Merge MS3D with external skeleton" function from GOAT

    1. Create a new SKELMERGE file by using "skeleton_slingbone", deleting all lines except the first one, rename "bone_pelvis" to "bone_root_navy", save as "skeleton_navy"
    2. Merge "Longship.MS3D" with "Skeleton_Navy.SKELMERRGE using GOAT
    3. Copied all comments from original "navy_cog" model, renamed group "Regroup01" to "navy_barb", renamed material "Material01" to "figure"
    4. Created new material: "Attachments", copied comment here as well from original
    5. Saved as "longship_goat.MS3D", converted and loaded: crash - "Model database failed to load model models_strat/navy_cog.cas"
    6. Assigned all vertices to joint "bone_root_navy: repeated step 5, same result

    Attachments:
    longship.MS3d
    navy_cog - CAS and MS3D
    navy_cog_mini - CAS, MS3D and JPG
New Ship Models.TXT - this document
    skeleton_navy.SKELMERGE
    strat_ship_skel.MS3d
stratmodel Converter.PY - works only with Python 2.6, no later versoins!

    All thanks to Yelü Dashi

    GOAT v1.1 + Milkshape

    1. Convert a vanilla file to ms3d (navy_cog) import your model as obj or 3ds

    2. Select and assign all the vertices to Bone_navy_root (I think that's it), delete the vanilla model

    3. Make sure that the comments box contains the same info as the vanilla file, for example:

    4. Once that's done, make sure you don't change the filename, keep the vanilla one (navy_cog).

    5. Convert to CAS with GOAT.

    6. Enjoy !

The shadow CAS certainly is working. Did you replace {insert your texture filename here !} in the comment with your texture's filename?

Weighting: I should have used 'assigned' - in other words you select your whole model and then assign it to that 'bone'. I am going to edit that.

You only need comments in the 'groups' and 'material' tab (see spoilers in post #2) - not in the 'model' tab.

Please upload the model (Milkshape and CAS) and it's texture so I can have a look. Also attach the descr_characters and descr_model_strat file. Please state which faction (descr_sm_factions name) uses this model.

You have to copy that comment into those fields, it won't get there on it's own

As I said: upload the files and I'll have a look.

I have to pass - I didn't manage to get the ship into the game. It had one weird group in it (Cao something) which seems to have been part of a comment. This group caused a number of error messages in milkshape. After removing the group I made sure the comments were all correct. Then I merged it with a working model as your model did not have a skeleton, eg the base bone, and assigned it to that bone. All of this is pretty standard and the conversion then went without a hitch.

BUT the game went into a loop for half an hour until it crashed with the log showing the CAS file being the last file processed. Someone else with more knowledge about the 3D side of it will have to take a look. I have adapted a number of ships for strat and I never came across this problem.

Note: it wasn't the 'out of video memory' error which points to a incorrect texture assignment but the regular crash message.

Here is a picture from the original navy_cog converted to MS3D. Notice the entry in the joint tab and the blue 'ball' - that's the root bone. Without it your faction symbol won't get mounted and I don't think the ship will move either. It might also be the reason why the texture isn't displaying at all.

i use IWT 17_07A to make ms3d file frome cas and as you can see no bone , but i can see in cas file it must be ....

i simply save any model in Milkshape and had only moving flag whithout model , i don't think it bone but if idon't see it in milskshape it can be ...

I am not sure if IWTE is suitable for this type of CAS model conversion - the tool is more geared for battle buildings and trees, eg no skeletons. I am using this converter.

Make sure you have a Python version less then 2.7 installed, else install from the applicable download link
Windows x86 MSI Installer (2.6.6) - for 'regular' operating system
Windows X86-64 MSI Installer (2.6.6) - for 64 bit operating system

Hi, i had that problem too, and i solve it with the stratmodelconverter_ver1_1.py using a vanilla strat boat model, but you can use a boat model, change it, delete all comments and and merge with one model of the game....shrink it or a part of it( the base model) all the coments will be unchanged and in the model you have made....it´s a kind of tricky way of doing this.....here´s some results
