Well, i'm travelling to Poland next week and I'm looking for a new fantasy series to waste my time with along the way. I need recommendations.

Something similar to Steven Erikson, since i'm kind of a fan of his. I'm asking for recommendations because i dont want to buy something which sounds good from the opening chapter but then turns out to be another LOTR pretender (which i'm very tired of). Any suggestions?

I've found lots of fantasy series here. http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersy...ts_series.html
You can select there what you really want. I hope this helps.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (manga) - Very different from Tolkien, with a completely different mindset. May take some getting used to if you're not used to Asian cultures. Review.

I don't know who Erikson is but my suggestion would be to check out The Looking Glass Wars and it's sequel Seeing Redd (and if you're feeling adventurous enough the graphic novel Hatter M) by Frank Beddor...it's a take on the whole Alice in Wonderland universe but with some pretty cool twists and turns (i.e. it has nothing to do with Carroll's work but merely takes place in another kind of Wonderland). It's pretty lite stuff and can be read fast but I thus far find it very enjoyable and fresh.

Darkness series by Harry Turtledove. Very good fantasy series about a magical world war.

It is my great honour to have my poem Farmer in the Scriptorium here.

A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin, the first of A Song of Ice and Fire.

The best modern fantasy I've ever read.

A guy in Barnes and Noble actually recommended Erikson to me after seeing me pick up A Feast For Crows.

It has a some similarities to LOTR but its original on its own. I loved LOTR and I really enjoyed Dragonlance. There's a huge world of Dragonlance out there but these are the "original trilogy."

Ok. Thanks folks. I'll check out that dragonlance series this weekend before i leave. I'll take a look at Game of Thrones too, since that's got some pretty nice reviews.

    Much appreciated.

Dragonlance is too formulaic fantasy for me.

AGOT is anything but, it's gritty, dark, morally ambiguous, features multiple characters each with their own points of view, is set in a realistic, consistent medieval world. It's heavily influenced by the English Civil War, characters are anything but invincible, a few characters I had come to love were ruthlessly butchered. It's full of intrigue and power plays.

I suggest it heartily to any fantasy fan.

I still think a song of ice and fire series of George RR martin is very good. But there are plenty people that think it's over rated and the biggest problem is that while we are being spoiled by erikson with a book a year, Martin is taking forever for a book (latest book is taking him 5 years and still counting)

I couldn't get into Erikson. Maybe I should try it again, but I need to reread ASoIaF.
