Default Noob Questions for an old player

HI all i have some questions that i would like some help on....

What are the grey squares stacked from bottom up on a bar by the town name. i know the yellow ones above them mean the number of units are housed there. But when the AI towns have them it seams to show what units they muster at the last minute.i have often killed all Ai units out of the town then went to take the town only to be faced by a large milita force that springs up out of nowhere.

but for me if i remove all my units (yellow stack markers). does this mean if any grey stack markers are present i will spawn instant units to defend my home town if attacked.

What disadvantage if any does the small factions have if yiu use the all factions mod.Am i able to play with the same options as the normal factions.......ie victory conditions etc..etc

    thanks for your help

The gray lines represent your town watch. Not sure on mods though, have not used them with ETW

town watch comes from having the town for a period of time. The longer, the more town watch you get. But at the same time, they cost $$ so this is where your justice minister comes in.

The Town watch (grey bars) and the cost for policing are not linked as far as I could work out. The Town watch seems to be based on the regions population and how much control you have over a region if you have had a region a long time and the populations high (like your capital city then you get a large force of town watch, the cost for policing (the thing your justice minister effects) is when a province is unhappy, you pay for an "unseen" force that represses the population but costs you upkeep as if you had units garrisoning but without the actual units being in play. It's good as it means you dont have to build useless units in backwater countrys all the time, but bad that you dont know which regions are using policng and costing you alot of money without looking at eachg regions info panels...

    Another question

upon taking over a new town i can understand why the populace are very upset at there new masters....

but i do get feed up with having to garission so many units to keep the unrest down.I know you can pacify them with tax cuts and happy buildings etc but these (buildings take time and money also some techs arent avialible to build such items at the time.

does having to many troops in a town add to unrest or is there a magic number. Also does converting the populace to your religion help or hinder.

Militia and dragoons help reduce unrest.Schools/colleges etc ,factories raise unrest ,also the level of your social tree.Larger garrisons reduce unrest and religious buildings,priests/imams,also brothels/theatres,etc.Stop taxes until unrest reaches 0.You can destroy buildings that cause unrest and build religious or theatre type buidings.Convert the people gradually to your religion.
Imperial Splendour mod allows all factions to be played, there is a mod that gives minor factions cannon and bayonets from start.I'm playing Courland atm. Some nice reskin mods too and smoke and blood mod.

Unrest can be a a tricky thing. Newly controlled lands you can actually tax exempt and for the most part it keeps unrest under control until things settle down. Seems for me after about four turns you lose the newly controlled status effects on the land and dependnig on other factors Religion, calls for revolt and such you can move armies away besides basic guards.

As it stands you always want to remove any churches that arent your religion and place your own in its place and start converting the population to help reduce civil unrest. Eventually unless you really manipulate the situation and use heavy garisons call for reform will make you change your goverment, once you do that it erases that unrest. I dunno if you side with the crown and win if it also erases unrest, someone else will have to answer that one.

    Unrest?

I recently took over Swedens capital with the Russians. To get the unrest under control quickly, I destroy their churches, and schools. I got a full stack in the Capital and I tax exempt them. I got a priest there and quickly building an orthodox church and repaired all goverment buildings as well so I could get the bonuses. Also got a good Minister that helps with repression. After 3 turns I got the Nobles on 1 and the lowerclasses on 0. No more looting and strikes.

yup, you can also build those bawdyhouses/pleasure palace things as well. It will decrease unrest more than a church but won't convert religon. Don't forget your opera house if its a city. Once its settled you can convert that pleasure palace to a church. Usually I have one 'entertainment' and one church.
