Icon5 How to change unit stat?

As I have not done this before, I do not know where to go or which software
to use. The search results are a bit overwhelming.

For me all units and stats are perfect; I just want to up the senator's bodyguard
    from 25 to 40/45.

    Any help, fellow Generals?

Any help with Roman Tool would also be greatly appreciated!

Go to the game install directory (by default something like C:\Program Files\Rome Total War\ ), enter the "data" folder and open the "export_desc_unit.txt" file (the well-known EDU). There's some kind of a description of the file structure at the beginning of the file - read it. Then you're gonna have to find the correct entry for the bodyguards (don't know the name of the unit) and change the appropriate values.

    Look for this entry:

type roman generals guard cavalry early
    dictionary roman_generals_guard_cavalry_early ; Roman General
    category cavalry
    class heavy
    voice_type General_1
    soldier roman_generals_cavalry_prae_mariana, 12, 0, 3
    mount generals horse
    mount_effect elephant -8, camel -4
    attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, general_unit, very_hardy, command, frighten_foot, power_charge
    formation 1.5, 4, 3, 6, 5, square
    stat_health 2, 0
    stat_pri 28, 34, no, 0, 0, melee, blade, piercing, spear, 0 ,0.7
    stat_pri_attr ap,spear, spear_bonus_12
    stat_sec 26, 12, no, 0, 0, melee, blade, slashing, sword, 0 ,0.5
    stat_sec_attr area
    stat_pri_armour 12, 35, 5, metal
    stat_sec_armour 6, 18, flesh
    stat_heat 2
    stat_ground 0, 0, -14, 0
    stat_mental 35, disciplined, highly_trained
    stat_charge_dist 80
    stat_fire_delay -350000
    stat_food 60, 300
    stat_cost 1, 1100, 430, 100, 100, 160
    ownership romans_brutii
The red number is what the numbers will be on normal, big is twice that size and huge is 4 times. So assuming you're playing on big, you want to increase that to something like 20.

That's for the early general, the later one's below this in the file.

Use something like microsoft wordpad or notepad to change it.

Thanks. I found the file, changed it from 6 to 10, opened new game, slapped the nearest rebel but the unit size was still on 25, huge settings.
Do I have to do anything else apart from changing the value?

Did you close down the game in between the changes?

Which unit did you change? If you changed the governor pr proconsul (numbers = 6) then you changed the wrong one and not the one I suggested changing above.

I started a new game to see if something has changed. Yes, the ones I changed was for Governor and Proconsul infantry and not cavalry. I want to send a senator with my armies but 25 is a little small. Just to add some spice.
Would the changes (from 6 to 10) show up in new game?

The senator uses the early general unit

    OK. Let me try again.

    Edit: Whoaa...this is addictive stuff.

My senator now has 40 bodyguards. The original changes worked, I dropped the text window, instead of closing and saving
    Sorry about that.

Thank you very much for helping, or shall I say, leading me into temptation?

Ps Do you remember your first time? Bloody amazing.
