Default [OLD] Fall of the Roman Empire (6/27/09 - 7/3/09)

ahem... so we are, I think about the time of Constantine... Several hundred years A.D.

Constantine had established a new eastern capital called Constantinople...

Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity

lol... I'm doing a horrible job here... but I"ll go on

at this time, the Roman empire was being ruled by more than one emperor at once...

this resulted into an East and West administrative division between the Western and Eastern Roman Empires

    Good start!

Give up some background on the subject then we can get into the meat of things -- I want to hear more about their theaory on why the Empire fell.

??? Did this really have to become a thread on it's own lol... I thought this was an open discussion about the Fall not a history lesson... I don't even know that much to lecture on it though

    but I'll go on...

anyway... some theorize that High taxation may have caused agricultural decline...

No worries -- I moved it to a thread of it's own because it's a specific topic -- I really think one of the biggest falls for Rome was the integration of non-romans into the military, lands, and ownership.

anyway.... some say a big factor to the fall were the German barbarian invaders, like the Visigoths and Vandals...

The Huns had also raided the Balkans and were a huge threat to the empire...

Exactly -- the only reason they were able to invade in the way they did was because the Western Empire allowed them to settle in Roman lands.

It also weakened their army -- the army that lost the west was not the army we all know and love.

Yes, of course... however the Eastern part of Rome lived on through the Dark Ages, it is mostly the Western part of Rome that was in a weak position.

and also... the Roman army, which fought best in open fields... were fighting warriors well trained in the element of surprise. Their enemies were practically invisible to them in forrest areas.

as we can see by this picture here representing the territories of the Western and Eastern empires

And by 493, the entire West was lost to the Ostrogoths

I Agree. Though it wasn't like they have had any choice. Romans needed Men to protect their vast Empire.

I've read entire books on this topic, and I think it was mainly to do with the breakdown of the professional army into mercenaries and barbarians and government corruption. Also instability because there would be a new Emperor every few years.

Roman is right; the lack of solid central leadership also made a major contribution to the fall.

There is a theory that floats around some historians that the Roman empire didn't actually die in the 4th/5th C and actually continues through the HRE and wit Charlemegne legitimally being a continuation of the Roman Imperial Emperor when he is crowed Holy Roman Emperor.

This as such would support also the feeling the the decline in terminology of all things Roman was aided by the Germanicism and Barbarianism of things like the army and trade.

I think one of the main reasons was they just had too much land for their armies to defend. Their forces were spread thin and couldn't deal effectively with the barbarians.

because thats where the money was at. Allmost all trade went through Constantiople. As everyone knows you cant have power without the finances to back it up.

and what lots of people forget, which is one of my favourite quotes:

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us Freedom of Press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us Freedom of Speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag
that allows the protester to burn the flag.

    great jaja

here are a list of my personal favourite quotes aswell: (dont know if they are correctly spelt, im writing them from spanish to english

"he who does not love his country cannot love anything" - Lord Byron

"the Spanish, preferably at sea, if on land may St George protect us" - british quote on the spanish army

"id prefer to die, if i be not with the best" - john keats

"the spanish arquebusiers, there is no line they do not destroy, no horse the dont scare away, no warrior they dont kneel to the ground. the spanish pikes, there is no squad they dont overrun, charge they cannot withstand and no one that doesnt admire them"

"if in the front you find a soldier badly shaven, dirty, with broken boots and an unbuttoned uniform, stand firm and salute him, he is a hero, he is spanish..." - Geranal Jürgens. German army quote from WWII, in relation to the spanish division that fought with the german in the eastern front
